Janet Jackson Receives An Icon Award
All eyes were on Mrs. Jackson at the BET awards as she was awarded the Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award. According to EW, BET enlisted her longtime friends and producers, Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, as well as Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe to honor her work.
“We began a fantastic journey with a friend we celebrate tonight. She came to us a young woman with a lot to say and boy did she say it. She is Ms. Janet Jackson,”
Lewis said as he and Jimmy Jam kicked off Jackson’s tribute.
“At the time there were few women demanding respect and sounding so funky doing it,” Jimmy Jam said. “Janet’s music and her vocal expressions were empowering innovative and provocative.”
Afterwards, Tanashe, Jason Derulo and Ciara danced off to Janet’s hits and had the audience on their feet. And of course, the woman of the hour got on stage and shared inspirational words to her admirers. Janet thanked her fans and family, who were present in the audience, and said
“Twenty-five years ago, we created Rhythm Nation hoping the world would be a better place. But today there’s even more to be done.”
Well deserved award for Janet Jackson and congratulations to the ultimate icon.
