Jay-Z Expresses Excitement On The Legalization of Marijuana in New York

It’s no surprise many New Yorkers are excited about the legalization of Marijuana in The State. New York’s own, Jay-Z voiced his excitement about the news as well.

In a statement to ‘The Grio’ this past Friday, he said

“It represents a long-overdue opportunity for New Yorkers, for the cannabis industry, and for social equity and social justice. I’ve seen firsthand the harm inflicted for generations against black and minority communities by the war on drugs right here in New York.”

This is a plus for Jay- Z business-wise because he is launching his own cannabis line. Earlier this year, the Caliva company and Roc Nation teamed up to launch a national campaign. They both called out states’ preexisting marijuana laws and gave black entrepreneurs equal opportunity to participate in the legal cannabis industry.

The new bill was signed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday, March 31st. This allows adults over the age of 21 to use recreational marijuana. When signing the Marijuana Legislation and Taxation Act into law, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stated,

“The bill creates automatic expungement of previous marijuana convictions that would now be legal. This is a historic day.”
