Activist, actor and rapper, Killer Mike is set to launch a digital banking app this upcoming January 2021. Mike has partnered up with civil rights activist ambassador and former mayor of Atlanta, Andrew Young, and media executive, and founder of Bounce TV, Ryan Glover for the development of the app. The banking app is to be geared directly towards the Black and Latinx communities.
The app is to be named “Greenwood.” The name is to signify the late “Black Wall Street”, which was located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This African-American community was thriving and posed as a ‘threat’ to the neighboring white communities. Ultimately, the Black Wall Street was burned down, leaving 300 people dead and 800 injured. It was ignited by a collective of racial violence in which a story was pushed that a black man had raped a white woman, and thus causing mass destruction.
The app aims to provide assistance and support to underprivileged communities. For each person who signs up, Greenwood will donate five meals to families who are in need. Along with this, donations will be made to the NAACP for every use of the actual Greenwood debit card, and will also offer $10,000 grants to small Black and Latino-owned businesses.
“It’s no secret that traditional banks have failed the Black and Latinx community, we needed to create a new financial platform that understands our history and our needs going forward, a banking platform built by us and for us, a platform that helps us build a stronger future for our communities. This is our time to take back control of our lives and our financial future. That is why we launched Greenwood, modern banking for the culture,”
says Ryan Glover when speaking on the app at a press release.
