The Ivory Coast has Banned Cosmetic Lightening creams
The health ministry says, that lightening creams, “that de-pigment the skin … are now forbidden.” For years the men and women in Africa have used cosmetic creams to lighten their skin. According to a 2008 Environment Programme study, 75% of the women in Nigeria buy whitening creams to “tone” their skin. However, many of them do not know the side effects these skin whitening creams can cause. Medical experts say they may cause cancer, diabetes, severe skin conditions, acne, thinning of the skin, and even glaucoma if applied near the eyes. Experts say the ban may not stop people from buying these creams, as the black market always finds it’s way.
