On Friday, August 13, Lil Durk took to Twitter, dubbing Ed Sheeran “the voice.” With this posting, Lil Durk fundamentally gives Ed Sheeran his seal of approval. Without a doubt that is quite the acknowledgment. According to Alexander Cole, a contributor to hotnewhiphop.com, Lil Durk self-proclaims the title “the voice.” And his fan base seems to agree. But not only does Durk call himself “the voice”, but he also has a popular hip-hop album and signature track by the same title. And in the lyrics of “The Voice,” he pontificates that “he became the voice of the streets….”

One voice, multipurpose

This time Durk lends his voice to give props to another. Inarguably, Durk’s recent nod to Sheeran as “the voice” demonstrates that he is not afraid to share some of the spotlight. While he is fully aware of his talent, he also recognizes others equally talented in and outside hip-hop.

Two hot artists genres apart

Durk has developed a massive image in Hip-hop. He has been around for more than a decade. His first introduction to the public was in 2011. After his entrance into the market, at some point, he signed with Def Jam Records. And according to Famouspeople.com, “Analysts now rate him [Lil Durk] as the best rapper to be associated with the record label.” Durk now has an expansive discography displaying his growing presence as well as growing fan base. In fact, in 2020, his track “Laugh Now Cry Later” received two Grammy nominations.

Sheeran, on the other hand, is one of the hottest multi-talented popstars in the market today. He, like Durk, has over a decade in the industry. And he has blossomed into massive popularity since he entered the music industry. According to the Recording Academy Sheeran has fourteen Grammy nominations and four wins.

Rumor has it

There is nothing unusual about the praise that Durk has given Sheeran. But, according to Cole, some speculate that this could be a move to secure a possible future collaborative project. There may be some truth to this rumor, or it very well may be speculation. Durk’s tweet could simply be the act of one artist giving the nod to someone else’s talent and work ethic other than his own. The latter could be more likely, especially given that both Durk and Sheeran shared a spot on the Hot 100 earlier this year, according to Forbes.
