Following the discovery of a new variant of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom, London will be going into strict lockdown along with other areas in the south of England. This new lockdown goes into effect on Wednesday and represents a change in the approach of Boris Johnson’s government to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new variant of COVID-19 is estimated to account for 60 percent of new infections in London and the pace of infections has doubled in the past two weeks. The new lockdown encompasses all of greater London and will last until at least December 30th, at which point the situation will be re-evaluated.
People will no longer be able to gather indoors with people outside of their household, but 6 people not of the same household will be able to gather at outdoor public spaces. Establishments such as movie theaters and gyms will be forced to close but retailers will be able to stay open. Many nations such as Italy and Australia have restricted travel from the United Kingdom. At this point, the United States has not yet restricted travel.
