In the current state of hip hop, it is rare to find an artist that does everything on his own. Many rappers employ ghostwriters and go-to producers to help them create their music. At some point, with all of the assistance that they get, artists start to lose an aspect of craftsmanship and become a small part of the music that they’re the face of. Jamaican-born musician, Masego, doesn’t have this problem as he literally does everything in the process of making his songs.
In his song, “I DO EVERYTHING!“, Masego highlights the fact that he writes and produces his own music as well as being able to play almost every instrument known to man, including piano, drums, trumpet, saxophone, guitar, and even tuba. This level of skill does not overshadow his outstanding voice and ability to make hit songs without getting caught up in trying to be famous, though. His tracks like “Navajo” and “Tadow” are absolute bangers that you have probably never heard before, but can change your whole perspective on how music should sound. They feature his wide variety of talent and his relaxing style of lyricism, but the thing that sets Masego apart from the rest is knowledge of musical composition and recording techniques. A lot of his songs are experimental in nature and emphasize characteristics in sound design like, looping, live sampling, and echoing.
All of these abilities combined allowed Masego to create his own genre of music dubbed ‘trap house jazz’, giving a modern take on classic sounds. This is not to diminish other artists, but rather to show the level of dedication that Masego makes music with.
