Meek Mill (@meekmill) has gone viral overnight due to his latest Instagram story. On Sunday, the Philadelphia rapper posted a video talking to some young kids selling water bottles on the streets of Atlanta. He recorded himself handing them $20 from the driver’s seat of his $400,000 Rolls Royce. He captioned the video of the 7 boys “Atl RUNTZ” and asked them to split the money amongst themselves.

Many have pointed out that the amount was disrespectfully low, amounting to only $2 to $3 per person. Critics have been quick to call this ‘performative activism’ because of his recording of the whole situation and posting to Instagram. Meek is reportedly worth anywhere from 14 million to 20 million USD. According to Meek, the kids were appreciative of the money, even though many people disagree with him.  “They appreciate it, they just hustling kids…,” he said on Twitter.

Real name Robert Rihmeek Williams, Meek knows about hustlin’. He built his career off of his ‘rags to riches’ story, so perhaps he was just trying to teach the kids a lesson of valuing whatever is given to you. Historically, Meek isn’t a cheapskate. The 33-year-old donated his 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom as part of the All-In challenge to benefit food charities in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several of Meek’s friends stepped up to defend his honor amidst the criticism of his act.
