This past Sunday, Miami Beach officials voted for a curfew and other emergency restrictions for three weeks. Due to concerns of an overwhelming crowd gathering amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Reckless scenes from the weekend displayed maskless spring breakers drinking and partying in the streets. Considering they were defiant of curfew orders, the Miami police department was sent out to control the crowds. According to police, more than 1,000 people have been arrested so far this spring break season.
The situation ignited racial tensions. Some white residents referred to the black crowds as “animals” or “thugs” on social media.
“We have to realize that we are definitely fighting an undertone of racism,” DeAnne Connolly Graham member of Miami Beach’s Black Affairs Advisory Committee said. However, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber rejected the claim that anyone has been targeted for their race.
Since then curfews have been extended in an effort to avoid further large groups. Officials say Ocean Drive will remain closed to pedestrian and car traffic, except to local residents, guests of hotels in the city, and employees of business establishments.
