Miley Cyrus Honored For LGBTQ Advocacy Work!
Miley Cyrus is probably best known for her role on Disney’s super popular show “Hannah Montana.” If you’re a bit older, you know her as Billy Ray Cyrus’ daughter, and of course, if you’re a bit younger, you probably know her for her twerking skills. At this point, the only thing we expect form Miley is good music, a couple of laughs, and barely there outfits. What most of us didn’t expect from Miley, however, is that she would use her platform to increase awareness about LGBTQ issues and transgender acceptance. Apparently, she’s been an activist for quite some time now.
In a recent interview with Paper Mag, Miley talked about her advocacy, and also decided to reveal some things about her gender identity. The singer says that she doesn’t identify as a boy or a girl, but that her gender is fluid.
Additionally, the 22-year old told Paper that when it comes to dating and sex, she’s pretty much down for whatever.
“I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me,” she says. “I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”
Last night, (June 16) the pop star was honored for her work at amFAR’s (The American Foundation for AIDS Research) annual Inspiration Gala, and delivered a powerful speech. Her date? Tyler Ford, a 24-year-old photographer and poet who also happens to be agender. Ford, who Miley describes as “a queer, biracial, agender person” is also a former contestant on Oxygen’s “The Glee Project.”
The two graced the red carpet at the gala, Miley in a bright red number, and Tyler in a long black dress. According to MTV.com, Miley got a “roaring ovation” for her speech that night. The singer talked about how honored she was to be receiving the award, how important it was to help others, and how she planned on continuing to advocate for the LGBTQ community in the future.
There are so many people around the world right now that deserve this recognition, and they’ve dedicated their lives to finding a cure for those living with HIV and AIDS and they use their voices to speak out against the brutal, unfair condemnation and abominable stigma that comes with this disease. And by receiving this award tonight, I promise to continue to fight along with such industrious army for a cure for this epidemic.

As a part of her efforts, Miley has launched an Instagram campaign, using the hashtag #InstaPride, hoping to increase awareness about LGBTQ issues all across the world. She’s already received some amazing feedback online.
