Are you ready for Mortal Kombat!?

The beloved graphic video game’s newest live-action adaption has been one of the most anticipated movies coming 2021. Being tied to Warner Bros’ HBO Max streaming service, ‘Mortal Kombat’ is one the biggest gambles for the studio in this era of pandemic movie going. They’ve already made significant moves since promising to release their entire slate of 2021 movies on streaming the same day as their theatrical debuts. Fans can expect films like Space Jam, The Suicide Squad, and Dune to be readily available right in their homes, giving them the option to skip on going to the theater.

Initially slated for an April 16 release, it now appears that Mortal Kombat fans will have to wait a little bit longer to venture into the world of gore and fatalities. The movie will drop a week later, on April 23, with only a week’s wait. It’s been nearly 30 years since the last time moviegoers ventured into Netherrealm. While some are aggravated, given the long wait, a week’s longer won’t be too much. Joe Taslim stars as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada will play Scorpion.

Warner Bros has hit the ground with the hybrid same-day movie release plan. They scored a big win with Godzilla VS Kong, setting a pandemic box office record this weekend. With more theaters opening up at the end of April, it makes sense why the date was pushed back.
