With names like DaBaby, Roddy Rich, and Drake dominating the culture right now, it’s easy to forget about dope artists that don’t get the same attention. It might be because they don’t fall under the popular sub-genre of “mumble rap”, but these are rappers that don’t follow mainstream norms and work everyday to become juggernauts in the game. From bangers to ballads, the content that they put out could change Hip Hop forever.
#1 JID
Atlanta rapper, JID, has been putting out projects since 2012, but caught the eye of Dreamville Record Label owner, J. Cole, with his 2015 “DiCaprio”. By 2017, J. Cole had given him his first studio album “The Never Story” and he hasn’t looked back.
When it comes to cadence and flow on a track, JID is currently unmatched. Songs like 151 Rum, Strawberries, and D/vision show his full skill set of speed, lyricism, comedy, and emotion. The thing that sets JID apart from the rest, though, is his ridiculous ability to collaborate. He basically acts as the third member to EARTHGANG, murders every feature he’s given (like Soho by Boogie), and is one of the focal points of the group album, “Revenge of the Dreamers III”.
#2 Joyner Lucas
Joyner Lucas has been fighting for respect in the rap game for years. After dropping the “Along Came Joyner” and “508-507-2209” albums, he finally got some recognition when Eminem featured him on the “Kamikaze” hit, Lucky You.
Fans of Joyner would say that he brings a whole new definition to speed rap by adding a little bit of a trap feel to it, but his most important skill is his capacity to tell a story. Songs like I’m Sorry, I’m not Racist, and Frozen all depict extremely powerful scenes that can change your perspective on relevant issues.
#3 Chris Webby
This guy has been grinding in the rap game for over a decade and has only recently started to gain recognition. The Connecticut native has had his ups and downs with popularity and drugs but he should not be slept on.
Webby is a student of rap and is always improving his flow. For the last two years, he has dropped over a song per month which contributed to three studio albums. His lyricism and word play are found no where else in rap. The albums and singles that he drops are solid, but his freestyles and cyphers like Feel The Bern demonstrate his full lyrical prowess.
