Naomi Osaka Eliminated from Olympics

So many twists and turns happening along the way during this year’s Olympics. Naomi Osaka has been eliminated from the Olympics. Osaka, the world’s second-ranked tennis player, lost to fifth-ranked Czech player Markéta Vondroušová, in scores of six to one and six to four, in the third round of the tennis tournament on Tuesday. In the first round, Osaka beat China’s Zheng Saisai, and in the second round, she beat Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic.

I would say that everyone played in the same conditions, so it didn’t really matter that much,” Osaka said.

Osaka was the first tennis player to light the Olympic flame during the games. Before the Olympics, Osaka did not compete in the French Open or Wimbledon due to mental health issues.

Osaska’s distance from the baseline may have led to her elimination

Osaka was able to break serve on several occasions throughout the second set. Vondroušová then tied the score with a rally, and the opponents began trading games while holding serve. Osaka stood a long way away from the baseline for most of the match and missed many of the Czech’s signature moves.

Vondroušová won the match by breaking Osaka’s serve once more in the second set and fell behind five to four.

According to organizers, Osaka left the venue after the match and would not talk to the media.

I definitely feel like there was a lot of pressure for this,” she eventually said. “I think it’s maybe because I haven’t played in the Olympics before and for the first year [it] was a bit much.”
