As Hip-Hop nears its 50th anniversary in 2023 (yeah, you read that correctly), a celebration is in order. While many are working on festive creations for the special year, there is one highly anticipated project already.  ‘Wu-Tang: of Mics and Men’ creator, Sacha Jenkins, an all-time great MC, and Queensbridge very own Nas, team up for something special.  As Mass Appeals’ chief creative officer (Jenkins) and founder (Nas), it’s no surprise that they’re taking it to the maximum!

Nas champions that “Hip Hop 50 will be the definitive, all-encompassing, look at an everlasting movement that will outlive us all.”  This spans from DJ Kool Herc’s seminal basement party in 1973 to the current scene.  While MC’s are given due attention, Mass Appeal’s goal is to capture the whole culture.  In addition to rappers, there will be segments on DJ’s, producers, dancers, and other artists that help build Hip-Hop.  Some lesser known contributors to the culture are receiving spotlight time, including the once legendary ‘Video Music Box’ show and Hip-Hop photographer, Ricky Powell.

Often young producers are brought in since Hip-Hop is all about inclusion. Additionally exciting, the section called ‘Push It’ emphasizes the power that women give Hip-Hop despite facing constant marginalization from the culture.  The excitement doesn’t end here as there will be plenty of podcasts and unscripted shows coming out as well.

The two brilliant creatives have a lot in the making and every bit of it sounds fascinating!  With Nas and Jenkins’ combined track records, this is undoubtedly a worthy celebration of the culture to its fullest.
