Nearing the end of the first in-person festival in the U.S. since the onslaught of the pandemic, Dave Chappelle threw audiences off guard with an impromptu concert to close out the Tribeca Film Festival. Acclaimed artists A$AP Ferg, Talib Kweli, Redman, Ghostface Killah and Q-Tip made up for a portion of the surprise concert. However, since festival attendees were without phones, there are no photos available (yet).
Shortly before the performances, Chappelle premiered his anticipated documentary Dave Chappelle: This Time This Place. The film follows him providing comic relief during the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement at an outdoor farm. The farm belongs to a friend of Chappelle’s and is located in a small Ohio town where Dave resides.
Following the comedic-drama feature and the well-received performances, Chappelle addressed the audience, offering a heartfelt message.
“Commit to being kind to one another,” he said. “They cannot break us apart, no matter what our country says, no matter what any corporation says. We will help each other get through tough times. New York City, I love you so much.”
