Heart-break is a real (and familiar) feeling that most romantics on earth experience. Although time heals all wounds, getting over that pain becomes most difficult. There are loads of memories and intimate moments to take into account. Often, it feels merely impossible even to imagine your life without that particular person. But, things come to an end eventually, also if you didn’t plan for it too. Chase‘s This May Hurt…But It Curesis the epitome of taking the good and the bad out of a split-up. As a whole, the album’s theme digs deep into being open with a lover, no matter how bad it may seem. This May Hurt…But It Cures carries nine tracks with ambient-type beats. Likewise, the songs mostly use guitar and lush piano riffs. This album, in particular, serves as Chase’s first R&B/alt album. And so far, it’s received significant recognition for getting fans through the quarantine. Notable tracks include “Control,” “Wanted To Be You (So Bad),” “Tell Me How You Feel,” and “Tell Me You’ll Be Here.” Naturally, the songs fall in as a continuation of the other. My favorite piece of the album lies in the voicemails that women leave behind, in which they profess their love to those they’ve broken up with.
The intro, “Thinking of U” comes off a melody from a woman who wants her lover back. The anonymous songstress sings with much passion and tranquility. To summarize, she puts her heart on a sleeve and lets it take the lead.
“Control” is a guitar-led track that sees Chaseexpressing himself with sincerity towards a former lover. In his lyrics and catchy hook, “Control” sees the singer apologizing for the pain he’s caused. It wasn’t intentional whatsoever; things were moving too fast. And that’s what struck fear in him from the get-go. After all, slow and steady always wins the race.
Additionally, Chase unveils a bit about his terrible dealings with Cupid’s arrow before continuing with, “I rose up from your love. Burnt up by the bullets that you hide.” As of now, Chase is wary of loving too hard. Throughout the track, Chase showcases two different flows through a naturally rich register. “Control” also seems to be a fan favorite, which Instagram user @alexzeus vouches for.
Fast forward and “Wanted To Be You (So Bad)” sees the singer expressing how he wishes to be like the person his lover perceives him as. But, Chase is who he is. Along the way, he caused her pain for telling the truth, but eventually, it needed to come out. He sings throughout the song, “And you ask me for the truth. Now, you’re left with a broken wound,” “I can’t say that you hurt me, even tho I wanted to,” and “But my heart, it aches. It was a mistake. Baby, do you know where this goin’?” His register closely resonates with New Jersey native Ethan Ross and Rae Sremmurd member, Swae Lee. At first, “Wanted To Be You (So Bad) seeps in with a dark undertone. But then, the song is backed up by a lush piano riff.
On “Tell Me How You Feel,” Chase reminisces on the precious moments he shared significant other. As the song continues, he tries to encourage his lover to open up, to keep it real. Lately, they’ve been quarreling, and Chase wants to squash the beef. He sings, “I’m out of my mind. And I’m not feeling right. Been staying up all night. Everyday a fight. No, I’m just trying.” The song dons an atmospheric feel, carrying electro piano riffs and electro synths. Some might compare it to The Weeknd’s sound.
Lastly, “Tell Me You’ll Be Here” unveils Chase’s biggest fear: Losing the apple of his eye. On a Twilight Zone-esque beat, he sings about falling deeply for another, to the point where he won’t be able to get up if she stomps on his heart. Elsewhere, Chase also speaks about their first encounter and how it made him feel. Though he writes about pain often, he’d instead get one shot at having a happily-ever-after. Chase sings, “I write these songs of pain like I’m craving those things. I’m craving your touch.”
