Noname Responds to J. Cole With New Track ‘Song 33’

After J. Cole released a song that seemed to be about fellow rapper and activist, Noname, titled “Snow On Tha Bluff“, she has now responded with her own ‘diss-track’ simply named “Song 33“.

The Chicago rapper’s answer to J. Cole was a quick and to the point verse that was accompanied by a beautifully constructed beat produced by Madlib. Noname, with her faster flow and care-free cadence, perfectly compliments the layer of funk that the classic hip hop beat offers. Her poetic, spoken-word style of rap was a fitting response to Cole who used a similar approach in his controversial verse.

Unlike Cole’s “Snow On Tha Bluff”, there is no question about who her lyrics are aimed towards.

“But n-ggas in the back be quiet as a church mouse, Basement studio when duty calls to get the verse out, I guess the ego hurt now, It’s time to go to work, wow, look at him go, he really ’bout to write about me when the world is in smokes? When it’s people in trees? When George was beggin’ for his mother, saying he couldn’t breathe, You thought to write about me?” raps Noname.

Her words are very well put and spoken with a tone of debate, and not disrespectful rage. Both “Snow On Tha Bluff” and “Song 33” do not resemble conventional ‘diss-tracks’, and, instead, pose intellectual arguments to each other in song form. J. Cole rapped about changing the way that she, and the Black Lives Matter movement, go about educating the public, and Noname responded with good points focussing her belief of people not doing enough to help during this crisis.

But is all of this really what we need right now?

These are two prominent leaders who fans rely on during times of struggle. In a revolution that they are both important parts of, they are fighting each other, taking attention away from what really matters. Chance The Rapper decided to step in and post a tweet trying to end this beef.
