Offset is putting his money where his mouth is to support Anthony “A.J.” Johnson’s widow after the actor’s passing last week.
The legendary comedian died on Friday at the age of 55. His wife, Lexis Jones Mason, created a GoFundMe to support her in funeral costs, writing “We want to honor him the way he deserves.” Unfortunately, shortly after its posting Mason took to TMZ to call out his fanbase for a lack of financial support. Mason, who said she will have to pay for all expenses out of pocket, tearfully begged fans to stop with the “fake love.”
“Y’all say y’all love him, where the love?” Mason questioned in the video. “Y’all not helping.”
At the posting time of the TMZ video, the GoFundMe had only reached $700 of its $20,000 goal. But since the interview, the fundraiser for Johnson has nearly doubled its initial goal, in part thanks to big contributions from sympathetic celebrities. Among them? Migos rapper and Cardi B’s partner, Offset.
Reportedly, Offset donated $5,000 towards the fundraiser, which will also go towards supporting Johnson’s children and grandchildren. Furthermore, Mason said she hopes to use extra funs to start a comedy school for under-privileged youth in her husband’s name. To date, the GoFundMe has raised over $70,000 towards reaching these goals.
Other celebrities who spread the love included comedian Lil Rel Howery, who donated $4,000 to the GoFundMe, and comedian Michael Blackson, who donated $10,000. Rappers Fat Joe, Faizon Love and D.C. Youngfly also made contributions. A.J. Johnson’s family said they’re grateful for continued support in carrying on his legacy.
