Exclusive Interview: Artist/Actor Prince Eazy Turns Heads with New Role in Chiraq!
We had a chance to speak with Prince Eazy, a rapper and actor from Chicago. His most recent appearances were a cameo on Fox’s TV show, Empire, and a lead role and soundtrack contributor, in Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq. We can also expect a new mixtape, Thumbin Through A Check to drop early 2016.
The interview focused on his dreams, his thoughts, his past, and his future; and he had a bar for every bit of real life we spoke on. Yes, he rapped all through the interview! Bars that reflected the inspiration he got from his step-pops, being raised by a man that took him in like his own child, after his own father passed at a young age. Moments in his mind that he illustrated through rhymes. It’s always dope when you get to talk to the man behind the music, and his bars are so much apart of him and his character.
This is a guy who is putting himself on the line in his music. His conversation about how important integrity is important to him, and the inspiration he derives from his favorite, Tupac, showed that he’s not into half-stepping for the sake of a co-sign or making thirsty moves, like cheesy dance records, for the sake of a trend. Only if it’s real for him, he will say it. His music is his own self, an artist who’s lived the life of a gangster, a black man who’s been restrained in prisons, but kept his dreams real to him.
This could be part of the reason amazingly good fortune has fell upon him. Spots on Empire and significant roles in Spike Lee movies just don’t happen often, and rarely during the same time. He went from watching Taraji P. Henson singing, whoop that trick, to having a trailer next to hers. Talk about come-ups. Mind you, he contributed significantly to the soundtrack of Chi-Raq as well as played a lead role.
There’s a lot of positive and negative talk that has surrounded the movie, and even some Hip-Hop heavyweights from Chicago have spoken out against it. Eazy though, remains un-phased. His suggestion, …don’t invest so much in what you hear, but see it for yourself first. And before you decide to talk shxt about a project that brings much needed attention to a violent epidemic, have your own solution ready.
Eazy also spoke on some of his solutions. He let me know that he speaks out at the juvenile centers for the sake of bringing positivity to an otherwise dark situation. He also got real about what he felt boys and men caught up in the streets could use,” …jobs and opportunities. So much energy. he says, and they need an outlet. Give them something to do, basically a chance to thrive, and they’ll do less of killing one another“.
His other form of motivation to the masses is his music, which is his first focus. Having an intimate relationship with Hip-Hop, it, Eazy claims is what helped him come through misfortunes strong. His only intention is to represent it well and real. He’s got his tape, Thumbin Through A Check dropping in January, and remained a bit secretive about the fire he says it contains. He’s got some Hip-Hop heavyweights on there like Kevin Gates, but wouldn’t give up much after that. He’s incredibly excited about his body of work, and hearing the passion in his conversation as well as being aware of his obvious drive, it’s not something I would sleep on.
He also told me he had something particularly special for the ladies. Us ladies always like special attention. Can’t go wrong there.
From the looks of it, we’ll be seeing a lot more of Prince Eazy!
