Pingy Ring on the Shift for Women In Hip Hop

Even with the increasing amount of successful women in hip hop, a lot of male artists are still speaking against their success. In 2020, when Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion released “WAP”, they were met with an uproar of negativity and commentary. So even though there are a lot of women in the game now, only a few are recognized and when they are, they are met with a lot of push back.

MC Pingy Ring is an emerging female artist that says, ““I do see a shift happening where — particularly women in the underground — are being paid more attention to,” said Marisol Velez, who performs as Pinqy Ring in English and Spanish. “Women like Princess Nokia, or Noname, or a Sa-Roc — you really got to do your research to know who they are, or to find them.”

She brought up an event where Snoop Dogg commented on “WAP” lyrics and says that they are too raunchy but then follows up with “… I’m [in] full support of the female M.C. movement so stop trying to make me a hater.”

Pingy responded to this by saying, “Men hate to see a powerful woman with a voice because what happens is we start talking about the way in which men have been unfair, the way in which they have been misogynistic in the way in which they’ve stopped opportunities for us to excel and for us to grow,” she says. “Men have made their money off exploiting and sexualizing women. When it’s time for a woman to do it, there’s a problem?”

She is determined to change the landscape as she spends her time teaching a hip-hop songwriting and entrepreneurship class for young women. In this class, she discusses self-confidence, anti-bullying, and creative writing.
