News Outlets Are Buzzing as the White House Confirms Plans For Hosting George Floyd’s Family on Tuesday, May 25th.
On Saturday, May 22, a White House correspondent confirmed the Floyd Family’s meeting with President Biden! Why May 25th? Well, it is an act of Memoriam! Almost a year ago, the world fell to its knees after video footage covering the last minutes of George Floyd’s death was released. On that fateful day, society stood helplessly as Floyd’s cried inconsolably for comfort from a cold world rife with prejudice and cruelty. Those cries went unmet! Shockingly, it took only 9 minutes and 29 seconds to lay bare centuries of systemic rot, injustice, and inequality. And in response, we embraced our sons and daughters a little bit tighter.
Something Broke the Day of George Floyd’s Death
And a world engulfed with trauma, pain, and suffering said no more, as they rose in revolt. However, the incident of May 25th only tore away a band-aid. As we know, healing requires more than exposing a wound to the light. Change requires consistent attention and action. And President Biden is attempting to be the change he wants to see in the world. This we can see through his political initiatives, and earnest desire to maintain an open dialogue. In fact, reports show that Biden has continuously reached out to the Floyd family throughout this ordeal. That deserves respect.
Change Takes Constant Action
And since that fateful day, almost a year ago, Derek Chauvin has received his conviction. And additionally, he is to face sentencing in June. According to other reports Lane, Kueng, and Thao, the other officers involved, will face a jury in August. Gratefully, we are moving in the right direction. But, is it enough? No, of course, it isn’t, and Biden recognizes this. In a statement following Chauvin’s trial, he had this to say,
“The decision of the jury was a giant step towards justice in America. But it still Is not enough. Systemic racism is a stain on our nation’s soul.”
And he planned to initiate change with legislation.
Currently, there are no details on what will be on the agenda. But, we do know that Biden set the 25th as a deadline for passage of the “George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.” Unfortunately, the bill remains in the Senate after passing through the house. But circulating news shows a great deal of optimism around the potential passing of the bill. And, here is to the hope that they get done. In the words of Philonise Floyd, brother of George Floyd,
“This legislation has my brother’s blood on it and all the other families’ blood on it.”
And it’s high time that America does the right thing!
Sources indicate that the White House appearance is only one of the items on the Floyd Family’s schedule. The family also plans to host more events with civil rights leaders and politicians on Tuesday. We wholeheartedly stand with them in support.
In conclusion, May 25th, 2021, is burned into our mind as the day injustice, unchecked brutality, privilege, and apathy. Forcing eyes open to the world’s disconnect. And the marker stands as a reminder that work remains to be done. However, it is our sincerest hope that the measures currently in play ensure a lasting change.
