Video footage of inmates turning up to Playboi Carti‘s “Stop Breathing” at a U.S. prison has surfaced. They may be locked up but that sure doesn’t keep them from having fun. It’s safe to say that their living quarters are lit, thanks to the banger from Playboi Carti’s album Whole Lotta Red. Now, who said they weren’t outside?

Playboi Carti released his latest album Whole Lotta Red on Christmas Day in 2020. It immediately became a fan favorite, accumulating over 500,000 units in sales. Whole Lotta Red also became Playboi Carti’s first number one album on the Billboard 200, and has gone RIAA certified Gold.

Prison Inmate Privileges

At one point, prisoners had very limited access to music but times have changed. Some of them even have recording studios. Entertainer and activist Common, opened up a fully-functioning music studio at the Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Illinois. As such, the music studio allows inmates to record and learn everything there is to know about making music while incarcerated. Rap music is the most popular genre of music in America and it has played a role in documenting the root causes of mass incarceration.

Hip-Hop’s Connection To Mass Incarceration

Rap music first emerged during an era of economic vulnerability. Therefore, it has contributed to the discussion of mass incarceration. As a result, rappers have written numerous songs about issues plaguing the black community, including drugs and legal injustices. The troubling aspect of the connection between mass incarceration and hip-hop is the criminalization of rap music. For a while now, rap has been used as criminal evidence to incarcerate young Black and Latino men. Read more about it here.
