On Monday, June 6, U.S. constituents witnessed one of the rarest rulings in history as several leaders of the Proud Boys were charged with Acts of Sedition stemming from the riotous events of January 6, 2021. Unfathomably, this charge is not only severe. It rarely sticks.
Capitol Hill Attacks: A Day of Infamy
January 6, 2021, was a day unlike any other. It was a day citizens will forever remember as a day of infamy. Several groups chose to align and storm the U.S. Capitol building to exert pressure on government officials through force and violence in an unprecedented moment. Sadly, the motive was a scathing and irrational response to propaganda alleging corrupt election proceedings.
Proud Boys Integral in the Fray: Storming the Capitol
Consequently, it only takes one match to light a flame. After a presidential speech by then-president Trump, thousands of supporters stormed Capitol Hill. The Proud Boys played prominent roles in the attack. As a result, the leaders have been charged with sedition or seditious conspiracy for their role.
This charge is based on evidence revealing a calculated plot to wage an attack on governmental buildings. According to evidence, Enrique Tarrio had access to plans three days before the storming of Capitol Hill. Reports show,
“Tarrio received a document titled ‘1776 returns’ that laid out plans to occupy buildings in the Capitol complex three days before the attack.”
This fits the bill of a premeditative act.
Proud Boys: Seditious Acts
At the center of this tragic display is the seditious nature of the attack. And given the evidence, the plan was to disrupt the governmental function and responsibilities of confirming Biden’s presidency. Such acts fit the charge the Proud Boys faced. As one source referenced, the charge of sedition that Federal Prosecutors used was defined as
“attempting to overthrow, put down or to destroy by force the United States Government.”
So, the leaders of The Proud Boys are facing up to 20 years behind bars.
More Charges to Follow for Proud Boys
Furthermore, as a source shows, the Proud Boys are also facing indictment for active recruitment in the events of January 6, 2021. The additional indictments being pursued include:
“Encouraging other Proud Boys to come to Washington on Jan. 6, 2021; Raising money to buy bulletproof vests and other tactical gear, and directing crowd members into the Capitol and assaulting police once the attack was underway.”
Unfortunately, this sad and egregious display exacted a toll on human lives and an incalculable threat to democracy.
Thankfully, the law has a long arm and is far-reaching.
Justice and the Long Arm of the Law
The events of that fateful day teach us there is a recourse to pay for every action. While justice may sometimes seem blind, there are some things to which a blind eye can never be turned. Where there are acts of violence, the bill always comes due. The five are due to return to court on Thursday, June 9. Stay tuned, FM Hip Hop will provide updates.
