Rachel Dolezal the ex-leader of the NAACP, who has been accused of deceiving the public about her racial identity has finally spoken up. Dolezal told Matt Lauer of the Today show that she has felt black since she was five. She also said that the only thing she did wrong was not correct people when described as being a black woman. In the interview she confirmed that she began identifying as black when she received custody of one of her brothers, who is black and considers her his mother. Many have compared her to putting on blackface, to what Dolezal has a problem with. She did not admit to changing the pigment of her skin or doing anything other than styling her hair like black women do.When asked if she would do anything differently, she said no.
“There are probably a couple of interviews that I would do differently if circumstances, in retrospect, I knew what I know now,” she said. “But overall, my life has been one of survival and the decisions that I have made along the way, including my identification, have been to survive and to carry forward in my journey and life continuum.”
