The rumor mill began churning about a possible Fugee’s and Root’s Verzuz when a flyer made its rounds on social media 一 and this rumor had fans super hype. But this time there was a vast amount of speculation surrounding the reality of this Verzuz. The Fugee’s haven’t been together for a while. The Fugee’s broke ties in 1997 due to strife between the members, according to a source. Then they gave it one more shot, but that didn’t work out either. According to the Irish Examiner, the group permanently disbanded in 2007 due to irreconcilable differences.
A hot idea, but Fugees and The Root’s Verzuz is not happening
While the rumor was a hot idea, it was an unrealistic one from the beginning. And since then, the rumors have been laid to rest. The Roots MC, Black Thought, addressed the rumors when asked by a news outlet to confirm the Verzuz, and according to a source, Black Thought denied any such Verzuz in the works. Now fans add another hoaxed match-up to their list.
It would have been nice
The Roots’ stepped on the scene in 1993 with their unique flavor. According to allmusic.com, The Roots, “One of the most prolific rap groups, was also among the most progressive acts in contemporary music.” Their Things Fall Apart Album was one of their most successful and went platinum. The Fugees also made their debut in 1993 under Ruffhouse/Columbia. The Fugees’ brought a freshness to the industry. Their style and unique blend were unmatchable. According to allmusic.com. “They translated a seamless blend of jazz-rap, R&B, and reggae into huge success during the mid-’90s.” Without a doubt, a Verzuz between the two would be legendary.
However, as for now, there is no Roots and Fugee’s Verzuz, and there may never be. But at least the hype that the rumor raised brought back into the spotlight two of the most prolific groups in hip hop history.
