The Importance Of Remembering A Name!
So if you say my name incorrectly, should I be offended? I read a quote on Instagram the other day that said, “Don’t let anyone mispronounce your name.” This resonated through my head because a name is such an important part of identity. People are their names.
This quote can be misinterpreted in many ways, but this how I interpreted it:
Letting someone mispronounce your name can be taken as disrespect especially if the person continuously does it. It means they don’t care to know how to correctly say it. They don’t care to identify you by your actual name. All my ladies who have seen The Devil Wears Prada know exactly what I’m talking about. How annoying is that?
Imagine your boss, or an entire industry butchering your name. As if Kanye West would tolerate it! As women in the workforce we already aren’t taken as serious as we should be. Clearly demonstrated through the smaller pay, the glass ceiling, and the stereotypes, now lets add some name butchering to that.
Women are not the lesser half, so why be treated as such. Your name is just as important as “Jimmy’s” in the next cubicle over. Let people know who you are, not who they think you are.
