Serena's leg injury

Serena Williams is currently awaiting the results of a medical scan following a leg injury suffered Tuesday at Wimbledon.  For only the second time in her renowned career she was forced to retire from a Grand Slam. This one occurred in the first round against Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, where Williams held a 3-1 advantage.

The 23-time Grand Slam champ was seeking an eighth Wimbledon title and a 24th overall major title before the injury. The record, held by Margaret Court, is 24 major titles, which Serena, 39, will have to attempt to equal at a later date.

The good news, however, is that as of Wednesday, she’s been walking while she awaits test results.

“We don’t know for the moment; we are expecting the result of the clinical assessment,” Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou told TennisMajors.com. “The manual test gave us an idea of the nature of the injury, not how serious it is … She’s walking, which is a good sign, and it excludes very bad possibilities.”

Williams was a heavy favorite to win her eighth Wimbledon title, and if her performance leading up to the injury had even a tincture of foreshadowing, that feat would’ve likely been accomplished.

“What she missed is what leads her to be Serena,” Mouratoglou said … “refusing to lose and suddenly playing at another level in crucial moments.”

As for now, tennis fans can only speculate on when her return will be and hope for the best.
