It pays to be a business, man. More so, it pays to be brand. In the case of Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, both sentiments are true. As we continue to appreciate the success and entrepreneurial mindset of the billionaire rapper, a story involving trading cards further highlights Hov’s brand’s significance, proving why there’s none like it.
According to Trading cards & Collectibles Auction House Goldin Auctions, a trading card signed by Jay-Z just sold for over $105,000. The 2005 Topps “Signs Of Stardom” trading card was up for sale by Goldin Auctions. It originally started with a $2,000 bidding price. Soon after, one buyer started to amp up the price. The Jay-Z signed card eventually sold for $105,780, breaking the record for the most spent on any non-sport/TCG card.
“A record for any non-sports/TCG card,” the auction site said in an Instagram post.
This move further adds to the lore of Jay-Z as a multi-platform cross-cultural icon and brand. Other memorable trading card auction sales include a Giannis Antetokounmpo Precious Metal Gems rookie card sold for nearly $100,000 and a 1992 Little Sun High School prospect card signed by Derek Jeter going for $60,000.
