Why Skylar Grey sold her rights

On Monday, Grey talked to Variety about her divorce from ex-husband Todd Mandel. The artist, who has been absent from the public eye for five years, explained that she had to sell her rights to pay her legal fees.

“Since 2017 I was going through a divorce and lawsuit that was just wrecking me emotionally and financially,” Grey said. She explained that though the decision was difficult, it was necessary to settle her divorce. “I didn’t want to sell them, but it was my only way to put the past behind me,” she said.

Variety also mentioned Dr. Dre’s, “I Need A Doctor” as one of the songs Grey sold her rights to. Grey’s divorce included a restraining order against Mandel after accusations of stalking.

Skylar Grey added, “[The songs] are still near and dear to my heart and yeah, I will always treasure them, but it’s different now. Every time one of those songs gets used in a movie or whatever, I don’t see any of that money anymore. But unfortunately, the majority of what I got paid for my catalog went to taxes and my ex-husband.”

Grey’s most famous track, “Love The Way You Lie”, has gone on to reach certified diamond and is now 13 times platinum. She has worked with several other hip-hop artists over the years, including Nicki Minaj and T.I. On more than one occasion, she has worked with Eminem, who produced her 2012 album Don’t Look Down.

Skylar Grey recently released a self-titled comeback project in April, consisting of ten songs.
