After four years of tending to their own, successful solo careers, the Spillage Village collective has returned with a single inspired by the struggle we have all faced in 2020. Originally written when Covid-19 was our biggest concern, with a few tweaks, the song has the ability to double as a racially charged statement in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
“End of Daze” features the original Spillage Village cast with some new faces, containing verses from Doctur Dot, J.I.D., Mereba, Jurdan Bryant, Hollywood JB, and an ending riff sung by the other half of EARTHGANG, Johnny Venus. Produced by an equally long list, including Mike Dean, Johnny Venus, and Christo, the beat has similarities with EARTHGANG’s song, “Stuck”, as it contains a ‘dreamy’ bass line that carries the song, instead of the usual 808 that can be found in rap.
After the intro and the first chorus, Doctor Dot opens the song with a lyrically powerful verse, highlighting his smooth cadence. This sets the stage for J.I.D. to come in and murder his part with his trademarked, rapid-fire delivery. The chemistry between the EARTHGANG members and J.I.D. is extremely advanced, and is shown on the track, as they have made countless songs together under J. Cole and the Dreamville regime. The song then shifts directions as Mereba enters with an outstanding feature. Her voice offers a much needed change in the overall sound of the project, but her lyrics and flow show that she is an Emcee on par with the rest of the group. Following the addative verses of Jurdan Bryant and Hollywood JB and a short instrumental break, Johnny Venus ends the song with an emotional hymn sung in his hair-raising falsetto.
Hopefully we wont have to wait four more years for another project by this powerhouse of artists. Listen to the song and watch the visual for it here.
