2020 in Review
2020 was an unforgettable year. Kicking off a new decade, we had dreams and aspirations of new money, soaring to new heights; only to spend most the year of the house. Let’s recap the most saddest, terrifying, uncomfortable year that made humankind come together.
5. The Verzuz Effect
Verzuz might have been the most creative thing in 2020. Starting with Swizz Beatz and Timbaland playing records in the house, Verzuz grew into a phenomenon. We saw DMX and Snoop Dogg look like the fun uncles at the BBQ. Brandy/Monica and Jeezy/Gucci ended their beefs peacefully. Drunk Jadakiss became a meme. Drunk E-40 went viral. Beenie Man/Bounty Killer was probably the best one and is often overlooked. Verzuz gave us something to look forward to on the weekends.
4. The Deaths that Impacted the Culture
3 weeks into 2020, we found out Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and 7 others perished in a helicopter crash. Weeks later, Pop Smoke was murdered. We would lose Fred The God Son to coronavirus. This might have been one of the most dangerous years for rappers as King Von, Mo3, FBG Duck and others lost their lives to gun violence. Rappers were arrested by the feds at an all time high. We lost Chadwick Boseman to cancer- The Black Panther and the Black Mamba both left us this year.
3. The Year of Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion dominated 2020 in many ways. She had a Tupac like year, where she dominated the charts and headlines. The Hot Girl dropped Savage early in the year and had Beyoncé on the remix. Her label issues with 1501 Entertainment were documented. She would appear to be in a power couple with Tory Lanez, only for him to allegedly shot her in the foot. Cardi B and her would change the conversation about sexuality in music with WAP. She would drop her debut album “Good News“- where she would address Tory Lanez and dropped another record that we would hear everywhere with Body.
2. A Year of Protest
Racism and police brutality didn’t take a break in 2020. In a span of about a week, we found out about the murders of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. Then the world would stop when George Floyd was murdered by a cop kneeling on his neck for 9 minuets. The world erupted in protest in the middle of a pandemic. Police reform was a national conversation, some progress was made but the shootings of Rayshard Brooks and Jacob Blake-who survived reminded us of the progress that has yet to be made.
1b. The 2020 Presidential Election
The 2020 Presidential Election was like being awake during open heart surgery. The notion was anybody but Donald Trump. We got Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, who didn’t move the needle as much. The debates centered around police reform and recovering from coronavirus pandemic. Joe Biden and Donald Trump yelled at each other like 5 year old kids during the first debate. The 2nd one was a little more civil. Kamala Harris went full Aunty on Mike Pence. Election Day was a week long with the mail-in ballots being counted. Donald Trump was up early and prematurely claimed the win, but Biden came back with mail-in votes and was declared the winner. Trump still hasn’t conceded defeat.
1. COVID-19 Pandemic
This is no surprise. 2020 was the year of the pandemic. Since March, we been in some kind of lockdown, masked up, and social distancing. The United States has surpasses 20 Million cases and has 346K dead. Worldwide, 83.6 Million cases and 1.82 million dead, but in brighter news 47.2 million have recovered. The pandemic shut cities down, no concerts, sporting events had no fans after being postponed for months. The mask was made into a political statement as the United States became the epicenter of the pandemic. We have more understanding and vaccines on the horizon and hopefully we can come back as society from the year from year. Cheers to a better 2021.
