Snoop Dogg Fed Up With Awards Shows: “They Not For Us”

Awards shows have been under public scrutiny recently, and Snoop Dogg is the latest to throw them the middle finger. After the 73rd Primetime Emmy’s awarded statuettes to overwhelmingly white performers on Sunday, Snoop took to Instagram to express his discontent.

“Then you wonder why I say fuckall these bullshit ass award shows they not for us,” Snoop wrote in his caption for a post showing all the nominees of color for this years Emmy’s.  Though many people of color were nominees, out of 12 major categories, not one person of color took home an award. “Emmy these nuts in ya mouth,” Snoop Dogg concluded.

#EmmysSoWhite Awards Show

Snoop Dogg has been in the music industry for over 30 years, and has experienced the ins and outs of an ever-changing industry. However, what doesn’t seem to change is the pattern of only white performers being celebrated. Cedric the Entertainer, who hosted the Emmy Awards this year, joked, “It comes with a lot of pressure, being Black, hosting a job like this.” Correspondingly, the night proceeded with announcements of majority-white winners across comedy, drama and limited series categories. Social media followers created the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite to call out how white Hollywood had swept the night. Although Snoop Dogg himself didn’t use the hashtag, his judgement of the awards seems the same.

“Black Hollywood” and the Emmy’s

Although they were far too few, the first non-white winners of the night came one hour in. RuPaul, taking home his 11th Emmy, was the first winner of color to take the mic. The award made RuPaul the most awarded person of color at the Emmy’s. Additionally, writer and actor Michaela Coel, won her first Emmy award for her critically acclaimed series I May Destroy You. Coel is the first woman of color to win the award for  Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.  After that highlight, frustration came for fans when the late Michael K. Williams lost for his role as Montrose Freeman in “Lovecraft Country.” But Kerry Washington brought joy to the night by honoring the late actor’s legacy in a heartwarming speech:

Facing the rise of cultural appropriation in Hollywood, people of color look to the future. Like Snoop Dogg and Cedric, the black community are calling out the oh-so-white awards, and taking media by storm. Let’s hope in the future, #EmmysSoBlack, will be trending.  Let us know what you think of this years Emmy Awards on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter: @FMHipHop

Cedric The Entertainer and Friends Open 2021 Emmys With A Biz Markie Tribute

Cedric The Entertainer opened the 2021 Emmys with an ode to Biz Markie. With the help of other nominees and celebrities, the legendary actor and comedian performed a rendition of the late rapper’s 1989 hit Just A Friend. Some of the stars who joined in include Lil Dicky, Anthony Anderson, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

“Some of y’all thought this celebration would be more subdued, kind of like an Emmys light, but that’s not the way this host treats his best friend.”

Cedric opened the bit with a short intro before making his way to the stage, singing alongside a dancer with a TV for a head.

“Let me tell you a story, about my situation. Couldn’t leave the crib, TV was my staycation,” rapped the actor as the crowd sang along to the chorus.

It was a heartfelt and thoughtful performance, honoring the late “Clown Prince of HipHop” who passed away earlier this year. Although the cause still hasn’t been revealed, the late rapper struggled with Type 2 Diabetes. The late Biz Markie had been in and out of hospital from complications arising from the disease since April 2020. The rapper first made it into the limelight with his debut album, Goin Off. The project produced underground favorites like Vapors and Pickin’ Boogers.

Biz Markie’s Legacy

Biz Markie, born Marcel Theo Hall in 1964, first began performing in nightclubs within the Manhattan area. He finally got his big break after appearing in the 1986 documentary Big Fun in the Big Town. His famous hit, Just A Friend, wouldn’t be released until October 1989. The song was released as the lead single of his second studio album, The Biz Never Sleeps, and went platinum in April 1990.

Cedric The Entertainer Biz Markie Tribute

This year’s Emmys were a nice change from the typical monologue opener. The entire audience was singing along by the time the tribute was over.

In her speech at the 73rd Emmy Awards, Kerry Washington paid tribute to Michael K. Williams. Williams passed away at the age of 54 earlier this month.

“The nominees for this next award astounded us with each of their uniquely remarkable, memorable performances this past year. But I’d like to take a moment to mention one nominee, in particular, Michael K Williams. Michael was—so crazy to say, was—a brilliantly talented actor and a generous human being who has left us far too soon. Michael, your excellence and artistry will endure. We love you.”

Michael K. Williams is an actor who played Omar Little in The Wire and Albert “Chalky” White in Boardwalk Empire. Williams was also nominated as a supporting actor in the drama category for his role as Montrose Freeman in HBO’s Lovecraft Country.

Before Sunday night’s ceremony, tributes poured in from Ava DuVernay, Niecy Nash, The Wire creator David Simon, Wendell Pierce, and Riz Ahmed.

Williams was found dead in an NYC apartment on September 6th. Investigators found heroin on the death scene, and an overdose might be the possible cause of death. Williams planned to go to the Emmys this year.

According to a police source of the New York Post, “No foul play indicated” at the scene of the death. “No forced entry; the apartment was in order.”

FMHipHop sends condolences to Williams’ family.
