Dave Chapelle Gives A Behind-The-Scenes Look At The Chapelle Show

Legendary comedian Dave Chappelle gave listeners many behind-the-scenes looks at his “Chappelle Show.” On the latest episode of the popular podcast “Drink Champs,” the revered comedian talked about many aspects of the show’s production. The podcast episode recorded several months ago finally became publicly accessible. The episode’s delay allegedly stemmed from a direct request by Dave Chappelle himself. The famed comedian requested that his interview be delayed following the mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas. According to sources from Page Six, this decision arose because the parties involved did not want to appear tone-deaf.

The Interview

Despite what many think, the episode is not technically a Chappelle interview. The episode was meant to serve as a promotion for the Black Star album “No Fear of Time.” Fans of the hip-hop duo, which consists of Mos Def and Talib Kweli, will know how often the team and Chappelle collaborate. So it should be no surprise they appeared together in this interview.

What Dave Chappelle Discussed

Many topics came up during the interview. Notably, the comedian praised the show itself. In addition, Chappelle insisted that the most recent Kanye West interview achieved greatness. That episode can be viewed here. Eventually, the conversation turned toward musical guests on Dave’s show.

Dave Chappelle revealed that early in the show’s life, he struggled to find artists willing to participate. Many observers may find this revelation shocking, but as Chappelle said in the interview: “No one ever heard of the show.” He also confirmed that many of the artists who declined were popular acts, acts that hip-hop fans were familiar with. While this slow beginning may be surprising in hindsight, it must be remembered that, early on, Chappelle’s style might have been too much for some labels to endorse. Dave Chappelle is no stranger to criticism

Update

Unfortunately, as of the writing of this article, the podcast appears to have made the episode private, without providing a reason for this. Stay tuned for updates on whether the episode, which featured a great deal of content, will become publicly available again.

Kevin Hart Gifted “Will Smith” The Goat To Chris Rock During An Epic Comedy Show

The slap heard around the world from the 2022 Academy Awards is still making noise. Back in March, the world watched as Will Smith slapped Chris Rock following a joke about his wife. Last night, comedian  Kevin Hart gifted an actual goat named “Will Smith,” to Chris Rock. Hilariously, this was during a comedy show at Madison Square Garden in New York City with Dave Chappelle on stage.

What Took Place When Kevin Hart Gifted “Will Smith” The Goat To Rock?

Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, and Chris Rock held a comedy show at MSG. And the room was full of laughter and tons of jokes. One of the topics that came up was how Hart had a live goat in attendance. And no one could understand why. But to everyone’s surprise he presented it to Rock as a gift. And let everyone know the goat’s name was “Will Smith.” Hart mentioned to the audience that Rock not only was a friend and inspiration, but he was in fact a mentor. And he was his G.O.A.T. Which is where the inspiration for his gift came from.

Despite creating a tender moment, where he says Rock almost cried. The goat made things a bit messy and actually ruined Rock’s shoes. “Chris had on some white moon boots and that goat got him,” Hart said on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Kevin Hart’s gift wasn’t the first time the incident came up recently. Last weekend while performing in New Jersey Chris Rock made a point to talk about being seen as a “victim.” Saying, “I’m not a victim. Yeah that hurt, but I shook it off and went to work.” Rock even compared the slap to getting a paper cut and it being that minor in his life.

It’s clear that Hart is one of the only people that could pay homage to one of the greats, while also making fun of them!

First Avenue Cancels Dave Chappelle’s Show

Unfortunately, Dave Chappelle did not perform at First Avenue last night.  Hours before he was supposed to perform, the venue decided to cancel.  They received backlash from Chappelle’s comments regarding the LGBTQ+ community.  First Avenue was urged to cancel his show by the community and its allies.  The prominent venue was sold-out for the Maryland comedian.  The venue is in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is known for being featured in “Purple Rain”, Prince’s 1984 movie.

First Avenue Statement

First Avenue made a statement and posted it on Instagram.  Instead of performing at the First Avenue venue, Chappelle’s show was moved to the Varsity Theater.  Varsity Theater is about 25 minutes from First Avenue and fans were able to transfer their tickets to the venue.   Many people took to Twitter to either praise or attack the venue for their decision.  Celebrities in support of Dave took to Twitter to ridicule First Avenue.  Tyler Carditis and Tony Gervino, for example, mocked First Avenue’s beliefs.  Both Tyler and Tony pointed out that they are not as accepting of diversity and freedom of speech as they claim.  Seth Dillon and Kimberly Klacik have also expressed their confusion on why the show was canceled.

LGBTQ+ vs. Chappelle

Other Twitter users were in support of First Avenue.  One user pointed out that all of First Avenue’s staff did not want Chappelle to be there and it wasn’t because of the public.  The staff sent emails regarding their disapproval of Dave Chappelle being booked at their place of work to management, but they were ignored.  There are people amongst the staff that identify with the LGBTQ+ community whether they work security, serve refreshments, or take tickets.  Spencer Gosewisch identifies as a trans woman and has been working at the venue for over 6 months now.

“They say that companies hang up queer flags in June and burn them in July, and that’s exactly what it feels like First Avenue is doing right now,” said Gosewisch

Another employee, Ian Sutherland, remains unsatisfied with the result.  He feels that Chappelle should have never been booked, canceling didn’t make up for it, and apologizing was only for the venue’s reputation.  The entire staff demands more.

Jerrod Carmichael Calls Out Dave Chappelle For Transphobic Jokes

Funnyman Jerrod Carmichael is speaking out about the transphobic jokes made by Dave Chappelle and other seasoned comedians. In an interview with GQ Hype, Carmichael talked about the current comedic scene and its problem with “wokeness.” “I actually f-ck with them, and f-ck all those comedians that are going so hard against them,” said Carmichael. The 35-year-old, who came out as gay in his HBO special Rothaniel, offered perspective on the controversy involving fellow comedian, Dave Chappelle.

Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans sh-t? It’s an odd hill to die on.

Jerrod continued, saying that if Chappelle wants that to be his legacy, then that’s his prerogative. This isn’t the first time he’s criticized Chappelle. In an interview with Hot 97, he referred to Chappelle’s multiple specials “about other people’s sh-t.”

Comedy’s Acknowledgement Of Changing Times

While Jerrod may be one amongst the few people willing to defend the  sensibilities of the young, other comedians expressed willingness to change. On The Joe Budden Podcast, Katt Williams said he doesn’t believe cancel culture is real. He continued, saying if being not offending people impacts your ability to be funny, then “it probably ain’t for you.” Long time critic of Generations Y and Z, Bill Maher, interviewed Nikki Glaser on his show. Glaser said she has no problem apologizing for hurting people’s feelings. She said, “I don’t like to offend people. It’s really not fun for me.” When Maher objected to this, she reiterated her point. When it comes to the concept of cancel culture, Jerrod said,  “These grown men are fine.”

I think, a lot of times, people who offer nothing truthful or meaningful about themselves then complain about society at large and create this boogeyman. It’s like, listen, that’s the most urgent thing in your life? God bless you. I’m tired of hearing it.

However, for every person critical of certain comedians, there are people who are happy to support them. There is no solution to call out or cancel culture in sight. However, whether comedians feel they’re being silenced or not, both sides are using their platform to air their opinions on the matter.

Dave Chappelle Attacked During Comedy Performance

Yesterday Dave Chappelle was subject to a surprise attack during his Comedic performance.

Chappelle’s Brush With Fate

Chappelle was one of many invited to the Netflix is a Joke: The Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. According to sources, others on the roster were Leslie Jones and Chris Rock. While it’s not understood how the attacker got as close as he did, Chappelle was rushed by an audience member during his performance.

A Grander Issue

Clearly, there is an issue with protections regarding comedians conducting their jobs. Undoubtedly, the masses are still reeling from the unsuspected attack on Chris Rock at the hands of mega movie and hip-hop star Will Smith. So here we are now; a little over a month later, Chappelle finds himself on the defense. Both incidents warrant a closer look at security protocols for protecting these artists.

The Threat Level: Chappelle vs. Rock

Many do not mention the level of threat the artists are facing. Some still debate the severity of the impact of Smith’s assault on Rock.  However, looking more closely at the Smith and Rock incident, most will agree that the difference is due to the nature of the assault and the perpetrator’s identity. With these dynamics in play, it is difficult to perceive the threat level in the Smith and Rock incident.  However, now we are beginning to get a clear picture.

The difference: Chappelle Incident

However, in Chappelle’s case, there is not much to debate. This is due to the lack of familiarity with the perpetrator. So, identity or personal attachments are separated. Therefore, it is easy to judge the act instead of making considerations relative to the proximity of the connection.

Furthermore, the attack on Chappelle posed a severe threat to his safety,

“The Los Angeles Police Department early Wednesday confirmed the attack, saying the weapon the man was carrying can eject a knife blade “when you discharge it correctly.”

While no one was harmed, the possibility of what could have happened looms large.

Chappelle Has a history.

This type of threat is not foreign to Chappelle. According to a source,

Before the attack, the comedian spoke about increased security around him due to widespread backlash for jokes he has made about the transgender community.

It is terrifying that vigilance has become a companion for the comedian.

Questions Which Begs an Answer

Given the Chappelle incident, the question have been raised. Why must one fear for safety because of a distasteful joke? Where is the line of separation between actual harm and perceived harm? Where are the protections for comedians? And more pointedly, in a rational society, why should comedians need such protections?  Indeed, the last question answers itself.

It is truly a sad day when those who have chosen the path of comedy as an occupation fear for life and limb. Regardless, we are breathing a little easier today.  The perpetrator was apprehended. And, moreover Chappelle is unharmed. The only thing left now is to settle into the aftermath, lay all our cards on the table, and answer where do we go from here?

Ja Rule Reacts To Will Smith’s Oscar Slap After The Resurfacing Of An Old Dave Chappelle Video

On Monday (Mar 28), comedian Dave Chappelle became a trending topic for an old joke he made about Ja Rule. Chappelle recalls seeing the Murder Inc. rapper on MTV around the time the World Trade Center collapsed by terrorists in 2001.

In addition, Chappelle asked Ja Rule what he thought of the horrific act of terror. However, Rule was evidently of the opinion that it was absurd.

“I remember right around September 11, Ja Rule was on MTV,” Chappelle says in a video clip circulating online. “They said, ‘We got Ja Rule’ on the phone. Let’s see what Ja’s thoughts are on this tragedy.’ Who gives a f**k what Ja Rule thinks at a time like this, n***a? This is ridiculous! I don’t wanna dance. I’m scared to death!”

Ja Rule Responds To His Fans In An Amusing Manner

Additionally, the clip was connected to the recent controversy surrounding Will Smith and Chris Rock at the 94th Annual Academy Awards. In addition, fans questioned, “Where is Ja?” Similarly, Ja Rule answered their call and appeared on Twitter shortly after that with the message: “Slapping season is OFFICIALLY in session…”

Moreover, the incident occurred on Sunday night (Mar 27). The Oscars were also playing. Furthermore, a confused crowd watched Will Smith walk up to Chris Rock and hit him across the face in the middle of his duties. Nonetheless, he found a G.I. Jane joke that Rock told concerning the bald head of Jada Pinkett offensive.

Celebrities Join In On The Controversy

Naturally, the internet exploded with memes and reactions at their expense. Celebrities such as 50 CentSnoop DoggOffset, and The Game all joined in.

“I feel you will smack the SH*T out of one of you n**gas bout my wife on national tv,” the Migos rapper tweeted. “Will Smith the greatest to do it.”

Will Smith Apologizes

In the end, Smith apologized for attacking Chris Rock onstage after the incident. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that he acted inappropriately but condemns violence in general.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” Smith also wrote in part. “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I am embarrassed, and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Dave Chappelle Defended By Family Of Trans Woman

Dave Chappelle was friends with Daphne Dorman, a trans woman who committed suicide in 2019.

Chappelle talked about Dorman during his Netflix special, The Closer. During two of the jokes, he misgendered her. The first joke was about the courage to commit suicide, which he quickly defended, saying that she would have loved the joke. The second joke had Chappelle telling her child that her father was the best woman he ever met.

Dorman family defends Chappelle

In a text message to the Daily Beast, Dorman’s sister, Becky, wrote “Daphne was in awe of Dave’s graciousness. She did not find his jokes rude, crude, off-coloring, off-putting, anything. She thought his jokes were funny. Daphne understood humor and comedy – she was not offended. Why would her family be offended?”

“Dave loved my sister and is an LGBTQ ally,” Dorman’s other sister, Brandy, added in a text message. “His entire set was begging to end this very situation.”

Brandy expanded on what she was saying in a Facebook post. “At this point I feel like he poured his heart out in that special and no one noticed. What he’s saying to the LGBTQ family is, ‘I see you. Do you see me? I’m mourning my friend in the best way I know how. Can you see me? Can you allow me that?’… This was a call to come together, that two oppressed factions of our nation put down their keyboards and make peace. How sad that this message was lost in translation.”

GLAAD, an LGBT anti-defamation organization, feels differently about the situation.

Dave Chappelle Loves Being Cancelled

Dave Chappelle is being cancelled for his new special on Netflix, “The Closer”. The LGBTQ+ community is upset at Chappelle for ridiculing them and making jokes.  Just as Chapelle suspected, cancel culture was on his case. Chapelle had plenty to say in response to his observation of the respective group:

The comedian has indeed been on the comedy scene for a long time.  He has never strayed from his comedic stance on topics of concerns.  The comedic community is not popular for being nice, but for the hard truths they present in a funny manner.  He displays a caring nature for the topics he addresses but, did he go too far this time?

The Controversial Comedian

Dave Chappelle is known for his direct jokes and punchlines. Nothing is off limits for the comedian, hence his grand fan-base. His tell it like it is nature can be perceived as uncaring and insensitive.  In “The Bird Revelation,” the first comedy special to focus on the #MeToo movement, Dave Chappelle ruffled feathers by addressing the history of sexual misconduct. Some of who tuned in were not pleased. The jokes were interpreted as demeaning the values of the movements, but how they are achieving them.

Chappelle’s Routine

Before he started the homophobic jokes, he specifically said that he is not trying to stir up trouble. He then continues on to comment on how DaBaby killed someone and there were no repercussions in his music career. Hesitant but firm in his stance, he addresses homophobic community. His career has derailed due to past comments of homophobic nature.  In The Closer, Chapelle says,

“I’m not that fond of these newer gays. Too sensitive. Too brittle. Those aren’t the gays I grew up with … They fought for their freedom. I respect that s–t,”

Chappelle admits that he is transphobic. He does not like the idea of them. However, he still sees them as people. He does not approve of their life style, but he still wishes for them to have the same rights as anyone else. All of Chappelle’s jokes about trans people are either about why he does not feel comfortable with them, or about them being humans just like anyone else, regardless of anything else.

The LGBTQ+ community cancelling him is ironic. All press is good press right? This special with the message of acceptance.  Chappelle is loving this discrepancy. “If this is what being canceled is like, I love it.

Chappelle ends his special by sharing that empathy is not gay, or black; its bi-sexual. In other words, it goes both ways. His overall message: do not judge others on how they love their lives, but for how they treat people.

Dave Chapelle Addresses DaBaby Controversy and Cancellation

Dave Chappelle is familiar with the concept of controversy. He’s joked about plenty in the past, and he’s dealt with some himself. Perhaps then, it is no big surprise to anyone that Chappelle brought up DaBaby’s cancellation in his latest Netflix special, “The Closer.”

The Offer

In the special, Chappelle took a moment to pause and addresses the LGBTQ+ community on his past, saying that he has “come in peace.” He then joked that he was there “to negotiate the release of DaBaby.”

“All the questions you might have had about all these jokes I’ve said in the last few years, I hope to answer tonight,” he said during the special. “And I’d like to start by addressing the [LGBTQ] community directly. I want every member of that community to know that I come here tonight in peace and I hope to negotiate the release of DaBaby.”

For anyone still unaware, DaBaby had a magnificent fall from grace during the Rolling Loud festival last August in Miami. Following his unprompted homophobic consequences, one of the quickest cancellations of an artist in recent memory took place in which DaBaby had his career uprooted in a matter of days. He was dropped from features, festivals, and more. In short, any and all that could washed their hands of him. He issued an “apology” and met with LGBT and HIV groups to discuss why being ignorant is a bad career move. However, aside from hip-hop’s problem child Boosie Badazz, the industry continues to avoid DaBaby like the plague.

Dave to the Defense?

To be clear, Chappelle did not seek to exonerate DaBaby. In fact, he gave the crowd a biography lesson. Chappelle brought up the 2019 incident in Huntersville, North Carolina in which DaBaby shot a 19 year-old at a Wal-Mart in alleged self defense. The most serious charges were dropped against him, as a witness to the alleged crime “was not available”.

Chappelle’s point? As he said: “Nothing bad happened to his career. Do you see where I’m going with this? In our country, you can shoot and kill a n***a but you better not hurt a gay person’s feelings.”

Chappelle’s bit will assuredly spark both blowback and agreements. Stay with us at FMHipHop as the conversation continues.

The film follows him providing comic relief during the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement at an outdoor farm. The farm belongs to a friend of Chappelle’s and is located in a small Ohio town where Dave resides.

Following the comedic-drama feature and the well-received performances, Chappelle addressed the audience, offering a heartfelt message.

“Commit to being kind to one another,” he said. “They cannot break us apart, no matter what our country says, no matter what any corporation says. We will help each other get through tough times. New York City, I love you so much.”
