Jewell, The First Lady of Death Row Passes Away

Jewell Caples passed away at the age of 54.  The R&B singer was known as “The First Lady of Death Row Records.”  She passed away early this morning after being in the hospital for nearly two months.  She was admitted to the hospital because of issues with fluid in her heart, legs, and lungs.

Jewell was signed under Death Row Records in the mid-90s, during the height of the record label.  She made songs with N.W.A., Tha Dogg Pound, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.

R.I.P. The First Lady

Before joining Death Row, she was signed to Ruthless Records alongside Dr. Dre.  When Dre left Ruthless, she did as well.  Jewell’s debut album never surfaced, but she was able to appear on songs with Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, and Nate Dogg.  She can be heard on “The Chronic” by Dr. Dre, “Doggystyle,” and “Murder Was the Case” by Snoop Dogg.

Many fans went to social media to share their thoughts.

“woah man…RIP Jewell. She graced so many classic Death Row joints. A beautiful voice and underrated ingredient in West Coast hip hop.  Peace to her family & loved ones.”

Co-founder The D.O.C. praised Snoop Dogg for buying Death Row Records.  He is proud of Snoop and all his accomplishments, especially this one.  He claims everywhere he goes, he sees Snoop, whether it be in the grocery store, on TV, or on billboards.  The D.O.C. also acknowledges Snoop’s ability to use hip hop as a tool to make a great living.  He feels Snoop can use himself as an example and show the youth there are many ways through hip hop to make a great living just like him.

Snoop’s Power Moves

He pulled all of Death Row’s catalog from streaming services.  On an episode of Drink Champs, Snoop explained why he did this.  He said those platforms don’t pay enough, and his plan is instead to create a Death Row app where all Death Row music can be found.

“Those platforms get millions and millions and millions of streams, and nobody gets paid other than the record labels.  So what I wanted to do is snatch my music off, create a platform….”

Largely known that low royalty rates are paid out by companies such as Apple Music and Spotify, Snoop wants to put the control back in the artist’s hands.

Dr. Dre Served Divorce Papers at Grandmothers Funeral

The legendary Hip-Hop billionaire Dr. Dre’s battle with his estranged wife Nicole Young has escalated. The already ugly proceedings took an ugly turn as Dre was served with divorce papers at his grandmother’s funeral.

According to the report, Dre was standing next to his grandmother’s coffin. On the other hand, Nicole claims he was served in the cemetery parking lot. Dre was never in the parking lot, according to numerous staffers at the Inglewood Park Cemetery, who all corroborated the same thing: he pulled up on the roadway within the cemetery near his grandmother’s gravesite.

An Ugly Divorce Gets Uglier

Nicole Young’s lawyer expenses and the judge’s ultimate order of $1.5 million are also in the filings. Sources from TMZ claim that a little more than $300,000 has been paid at this time. However, Dre claims that the entire sum has been paid. According to Young, the remaining balance is $1,224,567.

In June 2020, Young filed for divorce from the legendary producer, stating infidelity with three distinct mistresses and having a child from one of the relationships that date back to 2013.

Dre was ordered to pay Young roughly $300,000 in spousal support each month by a judge in July. Unless the court determines differently, the former NWA member will have to maintain paying his ex until she remarries or enters into a domestic partnership.

The estranged couple, who have a son, Truice, 24, and a daughter, Truly, 20, have been unable to reach an agreement on how to divide Dre’s estimated $800 million fortune.

According to DJ Battlecat’s recent Instagram post, the Beats By Dre CEO will soon release his highly awaited solo album. It will be his first album since 2015’s “Compton”.

#FM Trends: Hasbro Toys Buys Death Row Records

Say What?? Hasbro Toys Purchases Death Row Records!

This might be the most absurd article ever. A kid friendly toy company buys a “gangsta rap catalog”. Apart of a $4B deal, Death Row was a throw in as Hasbro bought British company Entertainment One. Weirdly enough, Entertainment One produces animated kids shows like “Peppa Pig” and “PJ Masks”. It also owned the label. Entertainment One acquired the label in 2013 for $280 Million. Hasbro got one of the most iconic music label ever in a throw-in with some cartoons. Wow!

Death Row Records: The Mighty have Fallen

Death Row had Dr.Dre, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, The D.O.C, Nate Dogg and many more. Suge Knight was the CEO and literally the boogieman of hip hop. They controlled a genre of music with classic songs and albums. Doggystyle from Snoop, The Chronic from Dr.Dre, and All Eyez On Me from 2Pac are legendary albums. The death of 2pac and the departures of Snoop and Dre left a void in the label. Suge would run into financial and legal problems. The label would file for bankruptcy in 2006. Then it would be auctioned off to WIDEawake Entertainment for $18 Million in 2009.

The Legacy of Death Row Records

The impact of the label is still being felt today. Dr. Dre is one of the most wealthy men in hip hop today.  Snoop Dogg is a legend, who has aged gracefully. 2pac is looked as a mythological figure. He is revered in hip hop today. Countless documentaries and interviews are always about the late rapper. Suge Knight as well has been featured in many media productions about the highs and lows of Death Row. Bad Boy, Ruff Ryders, Murder Inc. and etc., can all have anniversary concerts and reunions to relive their glory days. Death Row just gets sold and passed on and now its owned by the company that made Mr. Potato Head.
