Kenya Barris Gives Behind The Scenes Look At Coming 2 America: Including A Scrapped Dave Chappelle Role

Kenya Barris, famed writer, and producer, revealed interesting behind-the-scene details about the production of his 2021 film Coming 2 America. The information came as a part of Charlamagne Tha God’s talk show on Comedy Central, Hell of a Week. During the interview, Barris, famed for his hit ABC sitcom black-ish, revealed several things he wished played out differently for the film. As expected from any screenwriter, he lamented the amount of time given. He desired more time. He expounded how more time would have made things smoother for the film director, Craig Brewer. Kenya Barris also wanted to have the director work closely with the editors. Directors and editors occasionally can become distant, resulting in a less coherent product. Something Barris is aware of.

Kenya Barris Explains How He Would Change The Film

Barris also addressed the filming location. The movie’s scenes were shot primarily at rapper Rick Ross’ at his estate in Atlanta. A fact Charlamagne jokingly pointed out. Barris revealed his regret that the movie was unable to be shot on location somewhere in Africa. Something that felt more authentic but trickier and more costly to film production.

Dave Chappelle’s Cut Role

However, the most intriguing regret of Barris is the cut content of the film. The writer explained the original intent to have famed comedian and actor Dave Chappelle play a role. He confirmed the existence of a character cut out of the final product, which was written for Chapelle. He also claimed Chappelle liked the part and wanted to play it, but that did not come to fruition for various scheduling reasons.

Certainly, Chappelle’s addition to the film would have been to its advantage. While primarily known for his stand-up and television roles, Chappelle’s film pursuits showcase his natural talent for comedic roles on the silver screen. Most notably, the cult classic 2000 comedy Screwed, in which he starred alongside the late Norm Macdonald.

Eddie Murphy’s Contribution

Barris leaves the interview on a positive note. Although the many elements of the film he wished could have gone a different direction, he does not seem to regret the movie. He claims this sort of production chaos is commonplace. Something that he experienced as a veteran screenwriter. He also praised the inspired performance of Eddie Murphy. He states at one point that Murphy can put a movie on his back and carry it, something that rings true to many. Barris’ interview gives the layman an exciting sneak peek into how movies and films find their way to audiences.

Be On The Watch For More

Charlamagne and his panel discussed other cultural topics during his show. These ranged from the infidelity and season-long suspension of Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka, the new Jeffery Dahmer biopic from Netflix, and Barris’ new collaboration with Kid Cudi. Those wishing to keep up-to-date on cultural and entertainment topics can watch Comedy Central’s Hell of A Week with Charlamagne Tha God Thursday nights at 11:30/10:30 PM on Comedy Central.

Eddie Murphy Is In Negotiations To Play George Clinton In Biopic

Eddie Murphy‘s third act has been a delightful experience. Deadline reports that the 2007 Academy Award nominee is currently in talks to play music legend George Clinton. The Nutty Professor star was not on my list of possible actors to star as the Parliament-Funkadelic frontman. However, this project appears to be a genuine passion project for the legendary comedian.

Eddie Murphy Must Discuss Rights Before Portraying George Clinton

In addition to Murphy producing, the team will begin searching for a writer after they have negotiated for rights with the “Flash Light” singer. There are no studios attached to the project. However, due to the actor’s three-picture deal with Amazon, it would not be a surprise to see them competing for the film.

You are missing out if your parents have not played Parliament-Funkadelic non-stop since you were born. George Clinton is among the most iconic musicians of all time. His music is what forms the basis of hip-hop, dance, and modern R&B. Moreover, he is one of the most exciting figures in show business. It seems Murphy is the kind of actor who can take on a role like this and prove the skeptics wrong once again.

Career Comeback

Aside from his outstanding performance in the 2019 film Dolemite is My Name for his portrayal of Blaxploitation star Rudy Ray Moore, Murphy has seen a comeback in his career. Coming 2 America, the sequel to his comedy classic of the same name, did better than anyone expected. Furthermore, Murphy will appear alongside Jonah Hill in Kenya Barris’ film You People, which Barris and Hill co-wrote.

There is also news that Beverly Hills Cop 4 is set to film this summer. As a point of reference, Beverly Hills Cop premiered in 1984, and the third film appeared a decade later. Therefore, nearly 30 years have passed since we last saw Axel Foley. Eddie Murphy is in the phase of his career where he has the freedom to do whatever he wants. However, he is old enough to know better, and this is leading to some exciting work.

I’m Going, Going…Back, Back…To Zamunda-‘Coming 2 America’ Review

By Prince Hakeem

As decreed by the real heir to the Zamundan throne, let the glorious celebration of Coming 2 America proceed!

My name is Prince Hakeem. My constituents have called me Zamunda’s Greatest Export, West Coast’s Best Kept Secret, and even The Lost Child of Wakanda. The long-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America dropped last Friday, and fans have been giving their opinions and reactions all weekend. Some of it joyous, and others not so much.

Let’s go back in history for a bit. Before the fictional African nation of Wakanda, there was the country of Zamunda. 1988’s ‘Coming to America’ followed Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem’s character, who sought to forge his path despite the royalty and cultural expectations set upon him. Along with Arsenio Hall’s Semmie, he ventured out to Queens, New York, to find him a bride. Akeem’s determination and progressing beliefs led him to find his true love, Lisa McDowell, played by Shari Headley. In the end, Akeem’s story in the first film wasn’t just about love conquering all. In many ways, its unique charm relied on a prince leaving his comfort zone, finding himself, and become his own man. Now, we once again meet Akeem, Lisa, and the rest of the Zamundan bunch as they transition into modern times. However, it turns out that this latest venture was more so passing the torch to the next generation.

Now I’m not going to lie. I was right there with fans and audiences when news of a sequel was first confirmed. Why? Who asked for this? If you ask the majority of fans, the answer would be no.

When it became known that the original writers and creators, including Murphy, were at the helm of this project, I became more optimistic about the outcome. Now, having watched the film, concerns about the sequel being bad weren’t wholly realized. Lackluster, yes, but still a fun time all around. So a happy medium, I’d say.

Aptly titled Coming 2 America, this sequel brings up back into the kingdom of Zamunda. Thirty years removed from the first film’s events, we find Akeem entering a new phase in life. Still married to Lisa, but now with three beautiful daughters, Akeem has transitioned from prince to King. This development comes after James Earl Jones’ King Jaffe Joffer hilariously passes away in the movies’ first act. On his deathbed, King Joffer, with the help of a new character named Baba, reveals to Akeem that he has a “bastard son” in Queens, New York. After finding out Semmie is partly to blame for the unexpected news, the two once again set a course for America to find this long-lost firstborn son. Portrayed by Jermaine Fowler, Lavelle Junson is a good-hearted yet, underachieving 30-year-old looking to prove himself. His world’s turned upside down when Akeem shows up at his mother’s apartment with news that he’s a prince and the heir apparent. What ensues consists of predictable hi-jinks, and growing pains, resulting in a conclusion very similar to the first Coming to America

Coming 2 America was a good movie experience overall. There are certainly pros and cons. For starters, the movie seemed overly reliant on the nostalgia wave currently overtaking Hollywood. From the frequent use of old clips in the first film to the many shoe-horned celebrity cameos and lesser-known supporting characters, Coming 2 America felt a lot like deja vu. It also came across as all over the place pacing-wise. Instead of using this opportunity to make a significant entry within the Zamundan lore, director Craig Brewer instead tells a watered version of the same story. This time with different characters, not named Akeem or Semmie as the primary focus. While a competent Fowler delivered in his role as Lavelle, the filmmakers seemed to have forgotten that audiences came to see Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. Their characters were sidelined for much of the movie’s runtime. Another noticeable aspect of the film was Kenya Barris’s writing, and influence saturated all over. The comedic edge, which defined the first Coming to America, was replaced by his sitcom aesthetic. A few laughs, sure – but it did not do any favors for the film’s authenticity. The modern female empowerment narrative was a bit forced and heavy-handed as well. It took away from the movie’s PG-13 comedy angle, making things too serious at times. While commentary on sexism is admirable, the feminist trope felt overwhelmingly forced at several film points.

For all the missteps taken in a movie, which no one asked for, Coming 2 America is still worth watching. This film’s charm centers around the same lessons found in its predecessor. Love, self-determination, and one choosing their own path are timeless and enduring. It was a beautiful passing of the torch to the next generation of black talent. As mentioned before, Jermaine Fowler proved himself capable of leading a film. His energy and conviction shined through his delivery. South African newcomer Nomzamo Mbatha stole every scene she was in a while playing the loveable and ambitious Mirembe. She’s an up-and-coming star. Leslie Jones as Lavelle’s mother and Wesley Snipes as General Izzi were the film’s MVPs. They took the material they had to work with and left a great impression whenever on screen.

In the end, the movie did not ruin the legacy; it did not add much to it either.

Eddie Murphy Reveals Director Ryan Coogler Tried to Pitch Coming to America Sequel Starring Michael B. Joran; Turned It Down

By Prince Hakeem

As the premiere of the Coming to America sequel fast approaches, audiences and fans heard from the titular comedian lead describe the journey it took for this return to Zamunda to happen.

During a New York Times profile interview alongside co-star and longtime comedic friend Arsenio Hall, Eddie Murphy detailed how he and the original film producers never thought about doing a Coming to America sequel.

“The way the story ended was kind of like, ‘And they lived happily ever after.’ Then all this time passed and the movie became this cult thing,” Murphy said.

It wasn’t until he saw how much of a beloved classic the film had become, that he began to consider stepping back into that world.

“Catchphrases from the movie start working their way into the culture. Stores turning themselves into McDowell’s. I see Beyoncé and Jay-Z dressed up like the Zamunda characters for Halloween.”

At one point, Murphy began to hear pitches from several directors on what the sequel would look like. One of them was Ryan Coogler. He pitched the film starring Michael B Jordan. In the end, that idea didn’t materialize.

“[Coogler] had an idea for Michael B. Jordan to play my son and he would be looking for a wife,” Murphy recalled. “I was like, then the movie would be about the son, it’s not our characters, we already did that. It didn’t come together.”

Considering the images we’ve seen from the trailers thus far, I’d say ‘Coming 2 America will be just fine.
