The Spanish Government Accuses Shakira Of Evading Taxes, Seeks An Eight-Year Jail Term

Paying taxes is necessary if you do not wish to find yourself behind bars. According to Reuters, prosecutors in Spain are seeking to sentence Colombian singer Shakira to eight years in prison for failing to pay her taxes between 2012 and 2014, totaling 14.5 million euros ($15 million).

Shakira Denies Living In Spain Between 2012 And 2014

There is not a great deal of talk in the media about Shakira when it comes to unfortunate circumstances. However, you can never be too sure about what’s happening in someone’s private life.

According to Shakira, she did not reside in Spain between 2012 and 2014. However, she still faces accusations of not paying her taxes during that period. Additionally, prosecutors asserted that “The Hips Don’t Lie” singer lived in that country during that period and that she purchased a home in Barcelona in May 2012.

Furthermore, six charges have been filed against Shakira in the accusation. As of this week, the “Whenever, Wherever” singer chose to go to trial rather than accept a settlement deal. Currently, the court hasn’t yet settled a trial date.

Brutal Fine

As far as the prosecution is concerned, the Grammy winner is not getting off lightly. Shakira is not only facing the possibility of prison time, but she may also have to pay a $23.5 million fine, the prosecutor’s document states.

There is no question that a person who makes poor choices should face the consequences of their actions. Nevertheless, imposing such a massive fine as the $23.5 million amount would be unfair, as it seems overkill.

A positive note is that different people came to defend Shakira. According to her publicists in London, the Spanish Tax Agency violated her rights. A statement released on Friday stated that she has always obeyed and complied with the law. In addition, she displays exceptional character as an individual and a taxpaying citizen.

Shakira And Her Long-Term Partner Have Separated

It’s safe to assume that the “Chantaje” singer is heavily focused on her tax situation now that she has been separated from Gerard Pique after a long relationship of 12 years, according to US Magazine.

The ex-couple began dating in 2011 and had two sons, ages 9 and 7. Early in June, reports surfaced that Shakira caught Gerard having an affair. As a result, they became the subject of headlines worldwide.

According to the YouTube channel Oh My Goal – The Best of Football, Pique addressed his separation from Shakira during a sports conference.

“I didn’t cheat on her; maybe she can’t say the same about me… I honestly don’t know what to tell you,” he said. “Is she blind and deaf? Because I told her over and over that our relationship needed to be spiced up. Perhaps she forgot, you know, she’s getting pretty old.”

According to the Spanish soccer player, he is almost in the home stretch of retirement. The former couple does not share the same interests. While he enjoys going to the gym to start each day, Shakira prefers knitting sweaters and taking walks at the mall. There is a belief among Pique that long-term relationships should undergo changes to remain healthy.
