Yasiin Bey AKA Mos Def Praises Kanye For His Pivotal Album ‘Graduation’

When Kanye West dropped Graduation, the world stopped.  He was in a battle with 50 Cent as they dropped their albums on the same day.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  Back then, superstars like 50 Cent and Ye, didn’t drop on the same day.  Maybe the same year, but not around the same time.  On September 11, 2007, 50 Cent released his fifth album, Curtis while Kanye dropped his third album, Graduation.  Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def recalled that day and felt it was a special moment for not only Kanye, but hip hop itself.

Drink Champs

Yasiin sat down with N.O.R.E. for his Drink Champs podcast recently to describe that moment.  He feels that people should appreciate Kanye more because he kept the music industry alive.  He outsold 50 Cent by hundreds of thousands and his album was of better quality.  Graduation sold almost one million records in one week!  Mos Def continued to say that the numbers from Graduation helped record companies to start streaming music.  And for a black man in Hip Hop to do this was crazy at the time!  The album not only changed the music industry, but it changed Hip Hop as well.  Kanye’s creativity and willing to experiment beyond the typical hip-hop format pushed the genre in another direction.  Hip Hop changed when Kanye stepped in, which made the way for rappers like Chance The Rapper, Kid Cudi, Lupe Fiasco, and Drake.

Curtis vs. Graduation

Yasiin found himself on Graduation twice.  He was featured on “Good Night” as well as “Drunk and Hot Girls”.  He likes 50 Cent and was a fan of Get Rich Or Die Tryin, but he knew Graduation was the better project.  Yasiin went to the Kanye’s listening party for the album.   He recalled that it was more of a production as it was in a movie theater.  Kanye matched the songs with programs and animations to Bey’s surprise.  He left the theater knowing 50 had no chance to compete with Ye.  Graduation was the number one record in the world when it came out while Curtis was number two, selling 690,000 units in the first week.

Fan Who’s Tuition Was Paid By Lil Uzi, Graduates Next Month!

A lucky Lil Uzi fan is graduating from college next month and is set to receive the perfect gift; his tuition fully paid off.

Uzi encounters fan

In August 2019, Temple University student Raheel Ahmad ran into Philly rapper Lil Uzi Vert while in King of Prussia Mall. The starstruck fan asked Uzi to pay his $90,000 college tuition, to which he only agreed on one condition: Ahmad had to graduate.

Two years later and Ahmad, also known as @BigAssHeel on his Instagram and Youtube channel, is finally graduating with Temple University’s class of 2022 in January.

Ahmad uploaded a video to his Youtube channel back in 2019 to document what happened and share his excitement with his subscribers. He explains: “In the back of my mind I might as well just ask him if he can pay for my college tuition and see where it gets me”. “I wasn’t even expecting anything, I was flabbergasted”. The video currently stands with over 450,000 views and 13,000 likes after the heartwarming mall encounter went viral on several social media platforms.

Graduation time

Fast forward to the present day and the Temple student hasn’t forgotten Uzi’s promise. Ahmad posted a video to his Instagram on Monday (Dec.6) going deeper into why he initially asked for the grand gesture. “Finances were always a struggle. After my dad passed away, we had to live paycheck to paycheck.” He said. The soon-to-be college grad continued peeling back his early life, detailing how his mother raised him single-handedly despite their financial issues. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. He said regarding his decision to approach the ‘XO TOUR Llif3’ rapper. He also shared this via an Instagram post.

In another post made the same day, Ahmad invited Uzi to his graduation ceremony and party. “Thanks again for all the support, if y’all can @liluzivert in the comments to spread the message 👌🏽👨‍🎓‼️” the caption reads.

Rap TV interviewed Raheel Ahmad following his huge social media incline after asking Lil Uzi to pay his tuition.

Success following Ahmad’s moment of boldness

Because of the generosity shown that day Ahmad cites the moment as a huge milestone in his life. “I witnessed the dark side of life having lost my father, but I have also experienced many good.” He stated.

Ahmad is set to graduate on Jan. 26 2022. He plans on putting his political science degree and 3.5 GPA to work. Advocating for more affordable higher education and resources for underprivileged students is Ahmad’s post-grad game plan. “I’m going to be using my platform to advocate for college tuition reform.” He said. For disadvantaged young men and women like Ahmad, this work could be instrumental in the near future.

Lil Uzi has not yet publicly responded to the invitation.
