Fivio Foreign Speaks After Drill Music Is Threatened

In light of Hot 97 disc jockey, DJ Drewski’s recent announcement of not playing any more diss/gang music, Fivio Foreign has provided his take on the drill music scene. With the threat of drill music being removed from New York radio, Fivio Foreign met with Bronx Borough President, Vanessa L. Gibson and Pop Smoke’s mom yesterday. Fivio defended drill music stating:

“This the drill community and (I know like) (I know like), the police and everybody, they be looking at us like n****s is starting trouble. N****s ain’t really starting trouble, they just tryna feed their kids. They tryna take away the drill music off the radio. They tryna stop it from being on the radio.”

“It’s not the music that’s killing people, it’s the music that helping n****s from the hood, get out the hood. So, we need that (ya feel me)! So, you take that from us, n****s gonna be in the hood going crazy on each other.”

Fivio’s stance is not surprising being that drill music was his means of getting out the hood and accelerating to fame. A feature on Drake’s album track, “Demons” solidified his spot in the game and the “Big Drip” rapper has not looked back.

What is Drill Music?

If you are not familiar with drill music, here is your brief history lesson. Drill music is a subgenre of rap music originating in the Southside of Chicago — in the early 2010s. The music is heavily influenced by gang associations, therefore resulting in expressive, criminal-laden rap lyrics.

Chief Keef’s hit single, “I Don’t Like” propelled drill music from the underground scene to the mainstream.

Since then, drill music has spread to other cities and countries, all adopting their own adaptation of the sound. Areas such as the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Australia and more relevant to us, Brooklyn, New York. The Brooklyn drill scene has propelled artists such as Fivio Foreign, Lil Tjay and the late, Pop Smoke.

What’s the Issue with Drill?

Since drill music’s inception to the mainstream, it has been linked to an increase in crimes specifically, violent crimes. Completely ignoring the local politics, policing and lack of resources within a community — drill music has been a consistent scapegoat.

Lyrics depicting smoking dead opps, murder scenes and the promotion/ridicule of gang ties, one could understand why drill is quick to blame. A blame so heavily that the entire genre of rap and its’ lyrics are being put on trial.

In 2012, a Louisiana judge allowed select lyrics of then, rapper, Lil Boosie to be used against him pending first degree murder and the death penalty. Since then, state courts allowing rap lyrics as admissible evidence has only increased at a rapid pace. Luckily for the rap industry, music superstars such as Jay-Z and Meek Mill have supported a proposed New York state bill that will prevent lyrics being utilized as evidence for alleged crimes.

Yesterday’s Problem was “Gangster Rap”, Today’s Problem is “Drill Music.”

Unfortunately, this is nothing new to the rap genre. In the early 90’s late politician, Cynthia Delores Tucker campaigned against “gangster rap”, specifically targeting Death Row Records.

Whether it’s rap, gangster rap, trap music, drill music or whatever the name may be — the rap genre will always be threatened by those that do not like who is involved and/or the music. There will always be those who have an agenda.

DJ Drewski

What do you think of DJ Drewski’s decision not to play any diss/gang songs? Do you think he made the right decision, or this is an overreaction?

Below you will find a clip of Fivio Foreign’s interview with TMZ:

Jay Z Is Now The Most Grammy Nominated Artist Of All Time

Jay Z is now the most Grammy-nominated artist of all time! Of anyone who has doubted his GOAT status, Jay-Z added yet another prestigious honor to his already lengthy memoir. Mr. Carter, alongside legendary musician and producer Quincy Jones, shared the title with 80 nominations. Furthermore, with the release of the 2022 nominations, Jay Z now has 83 nominations.

His nomination for Album of the Year and Best Rap Song derives from Kanye West’s Donda album. The third from the same Best Rap Song category for the song “Bath Salts” by Nas and the also late DMX.

The Grammy full-circle moment

The honor of this nomination with late Bronx rapper DMX surrounds Hov’s first Grammy nomination in 1999. Jay recalls how he boycotted the awards show due to DMX not receiving a nomination.

However, he had two albums that charted No. 1 on Billboards 200. He has always shared respect for other rappers and also displayed this early on in his career. Listen to this snippet of Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club; Rumor Report.

Jay-Z and other Artists demand respect from The Recording Academy

Jay-Z’s decision to boycott the Grammys has seemingly been a reoccurring theme. Several artists have questioned the motives of the academy’s voting standards. This year alone has caused the most prominent artists of this decade to call out the recording academy. They called attention to the lack of gender and racial diversity displayed amongst past winners.

Speculation of a deficiency in the nomination process stemming from 63 years of the Grammys. For this reason, The Weeknd, who had the most successful runs of his career, was left questioning what may be the problem. His LP, After Hours, was on the Billboard 200 consecutively 4 weeks and counting but somehow did not receive a nomination.

“Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” he said.

The unleash of f*** the Grammy’s tweets flooded social media. Kanye West, who urinated on his Grammy in frustration, was less than pleased with his standings.

In 2018, Hov led the nominations with 8 but lost in every category. He didn’t hold back on the awards when he and wifey Beyoncé released “APESH –.”

“Tell the Grammy’s f— that 0-for-8 sh–,” he rapped.

Signed, sealed, delivered

The Brooklyn, New York music mogul is coasting his way into history. With his recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and now Grammy historical moment, Jay-Z made his name one that will ring on far longer than we can fathom.

Jay-Z Invests $19 Million Into Cannabis POS Platform Flowhub

Shawn Carter, best known as Jay-Z, is investing a shocking $19 Million into his cannabis ventures. He has partnered with Flowhub, a cannabis retail point-of-sale(POS) platform for marijuana dispensaries. The financing was led by venture firms Headline and Poseidon.

Shawn “business, man” Carter

Kyle Sherman founded Flowhub in 2015 and is more than honored to partner with him. In a sit-down with Forbes, he shares his excitement about working with the mogul.

“When Jay says, ‘I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man,’ it’s true,” says Sherman. “He’s got incredible business acumen—he really knows how to surround himself with brilliant people and build great companies,” he continued.

Jay-Z famously rapped this line on the remix to Diamonds From Sierra Leone in 2005. Mr. Carter has embodied this, and for this reason, we know the multimillion-dollar investment was strategic.

In 2019, Jay-Z launched his cannabis company, Monogram, to support a new chapter in cannabis.

“MONOGRAM MARKS A NEW CHAPTER IN CANNABIS DEFINED BY DIGNITY, CARE AND CONSISTENCY. IT IS A COLLECTIVE EFFORT TO BRING YOU THE BEST, AND A HUMBLE PURSUIT TO DISCOVER WHAT THE BEST TRULY MEANS.”

Specifically, Carter launched the Social Equity Ventures fund to provide up to $1 million for minority-owned cannabis startups. His overall goal was to boost Black participation in the predominantly white cannabis industry. His efforts are fueled by the vast impact the war on drugs has had on the black community.

Regarding his billion-dollar net worth, Forbes reveals that roughly USD 425 million of Jay-Z’s fortune comes from cash investments and stakes.

Why did Jay-Z partner with Flowhub?

Launched in June 2021, Flowhub’s social equity program invests in those adversely impacted by the War on Drugs. To emphasize the strategic partnership, the additional funding from Carter will accelerate expansion into emerging markets. Subsequently, it will aid in further development of product lines and grow its social equity program.

The program will provide eligible social equity business owners with Flowhub’s POS software at a discounted rate. To date, Flowhub has awarded over $1 million worth of software products to eligible cannabis entrepreneurs via this program.

All things considered, these powerful companies join together effortlessly. With a common goal to deter the war on drugs, Carter has shown again why he is The Business Man.

Jay Z’s Team Roc Files Lawsuit Exposing Kansas City Police Department

Jay Z’s philanthropic group, Team Roc, is suing the Kansas City Police Department (KCKPD) in an alleged case of cop misconduct. Team Roc says they requested public information from KCKPD regarding a case, but only received partial documents. The withheld information could allude to an internal cover up from KCKPD. In pursuing the case, Team Roc is doing their due diligence to help expose a corrupt system. Kansas City activists have called for an investigation of KCKPD after multiple incidents of misconduct involving officers. In the past, KCKPD officers have been charged with committing sex crimes involving a minor and assaulting an inmate.

This is not the first time the KCKPD have seen misconduct and discrimination lawsuits. Previously, a black female officer sued the department in federal court over claims of racial and gender discrimination. In an interview with CBS News, Dania Diaz, Roc Nation’s managing director of philanthropy, said she hopes that lawsuit will expose misconduct within the KCKPD as well as in the community.

Jay-Z Leading By Example

Hov formed Team Roc in 2018 with the mission of shedding light on social injustice and leaving an impact locally and globally. Since then, charitable giving and activism have been at the forefront of Team Roc’s efforts. Attempts to silence victims of police misconduct, especially minorities, are growing these days. Acting as a voice to the voiceless,  Team Roc and other groups like it have not ceased their efforts, rising to meet the current challenge.

Expanding The Brand

Alongside Team Roc, Jay Z has expanded the Roc Nation brand beyond music and entertainment. Roc Nation formed an alliance with the NFL in efforts to manage the league’s entertainment ventures, including the Super Bowl halftime show. Additionally, Team Roc furthers their community activism efforts through the NFL’s Inspire Change program. Diaz said:

“There is no strict science behind it- it’s what moves our hearts.”

Taking on lesser-known cases nationally is all part of Team Roc’s mission to support the entire black community.

Previously, Team Roc’s efforts have included dismissing charges in the 2018 arrest of Montavious Smith for failing to remove his hoodie in a Memphis mall. And in June of 2018, 17-year-old Antwon Rose Jr., was riding in a car that was pulled over by East Pittsburgh police. Rose fled the scene, and police gunned him down. Afterwards, Team Roc worked with Antwon’s mother to develop a PSA raising awareness on his death and others like it. Clearly, our country needs changes, and Jay-Z and Team Roc are setting the example. Weigh in on this issue on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter: @FMHipHop.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: OG of Graffiti’s $40 Million Painting

Jean-Michel Basquiat, proves his legendary stance, as his painting is brought to market. “Hardware Store,” painted in 1983, has been under wraps for over 30 years but has now made its way to Art Basel in Switzerland. Showcased for the first time, this is Art Basel’s most expensive piece to date; valued at $40 million   Measuring approximately 7 feet tall and 11 feet wide, this diptych piece is Basquiat’s largest of its style.

Who was Jean-Michel Basquiat?

Jean-Michel Basquiat, known as the “OG of graffiti,” was born in Brooklyn, New York on Dec., 22, 1960.  Critics began to take notice of his artwork and the messages that came with it. His controversial style of painting with graffiti-like images and screwed text embodied that of rebellion. Early childhood traumas led to Basquiat to dropping out of high school and leaving home at age 17.  Together with graffiti artists Al Diaz and Shannon Dawson, they formed SAMO. The trio began a graffiti campaign around New York City.  Emerging at the age of 20, Basquiat participated in his first formal public exhibition, “The Times Square Show” (1980).  The post-graffiti moment in 1980s New York City marked the transition of street art from city walls and subway trains to canvas and into the art world. Thus was the beginning of what would make him the face of Hip Hop culture.

Basquiat and His Mark on Hip Hop

Basquiat’s work has been mentioned in some of your favorite hip hop artists’ music and noticed in several artistic cultural endeavors. Jay-Z raps, “I got Basquiat’s in the lobby of my spot,” in his 2008 hit, “Ain’t I”.  Other hip hop artists, also mention the late street artists work. His importance to the culture stems from his collaborations with Andy Warhol and Francesco Clemente.  His work addressed his childhood with child-like drawings like “Pez Dispenser”, which shows his depiction of a tyrannosaurus rex and a crown hovering over it.  In translation, he illustrated the oppression of blacks but in turn shows power and dominance they possess. His problems with homelessness were relatable in the black community. This wave of hip hop artists showed the world that the black culture was something to be celebrated.

Controversy After Death

Jean-Michel Basquiat died of a drug overdose on Aug., 12, 1988. In May 2017, a Japanese billionaire bought “Untitled,” a 1982 painting of a skull, for $110.5 million at a Sotheby’s auction. It was also the highest price for a painting by Basquiat and by a Black artist.

This year’s Tiffany ad campaign features Beyoncé and Jay-Z in front of a never before seen Basquiat painting. However, friends and family of the late artist were “horrified,” at the release of the campaign. The American luxury jewelry company purchased the artwork entitled Equals Pi. Alexis Adler who lived with Basquiat from 1979 to 1980, questioned the artworks use as a prop in an ad.  Stephen Torton, who worked for Basquiat for many years, stated through a post on Instagram, “…The idea that this blue background, which I mixed and applied was in any way related to Tiffany Blue is so absurd that at first I chose not to comment.” The release of the $40 million painting has fans raving, why so serious?  Weigh in on the topic on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram: @FMHipHop.

Signed Jay-Z Trading Card Sells For Record $150K Bidding Price

By Prince Hakeem

It pays to be a business, man. More so, it pays to be brand. In the case of Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, both sentiments are true. As we continue to appreciate the success and entrepreneurial mindset of the billionaire rapper, a story involving trading cards further highlights Hov’s brand’s significance, proving why there’s none like it.

According to Trading cards & Collectibles Auction House Goldin Auctions, a trading card signed by Jay-Z just sold for over $105,000. The 2005 Topps “Signs Of Stardom” trading card was up for sale by Goldin Auctions. It originally started with a $2,000 bidding price. Soon after, one buyer started to amp up the price. The Jay-Z signed card eventually sold for $105,780, breaking the record for the most spent on any non-sport/TCG card.

“A record for any non-sports/TCG card,” the auction site said in an Instagram post.

This move further adds to the lore of Jay-Z as a multi-platform cross-cultural icon and brand. Other memorable trading card auction sales include a Giannis Antetokounmpo Precious Metal Gems rookie card sold for nearly $100,000 and a 1992 Little Sun High School prospect card signed by Derek Jeter going for $60,000.

The T-Pain Effect

Who would have thought that a technology developed to pitch correct vocals would spawn a new genre of music? If you’ve been paying attention to T-Pain’s career, it might look like he did. T-Pain first appeared on the scene in 2005 with his debut album, “Rappa Ternt Sanga.” At the time, what set him apart was his decision to use Auto-Tune while singing wildly catchy songs. T-Pain coined his hybrid of rapping and singing as “Hard & B.”

Recently, T-Pain stated he believes he is the influence for artists using Auto-Tune today, and he is absolutely correct. He is completely responsible for the re-emergence and the popularity of the tool. He also understands where the sound originated and is respectful of it.

Years ago, T-Pain did face scrutiny over his sound, and JAY-Z even called for the “Death of Auto-Tune”(D.O.A.). Not only did he survive that, but he also launched the sound of a generation and a whole new genre of music. It’s nice to see what foresight and gut instinct will get an artist in this industry. I wonder how many artists know T-Pain is the reason they’re so successful. Do you agree that T-Pain influenced the usage of Auto-Tune?

Jay-Z To Produce Netflix Thriller “Forty Acres”

Jay-Z (@allthingsjayz) is working on producing a new movie for Netflix, called Forty Acres, based on the best-selling novel by Dwayne Alexander Smith. The book, published in 2014, won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Debut Author. The film is still in its early developmental stages but is said to be a cross between Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Tom Cruise’s 1993 film The Firm.

Smith’s book is described as the story of a civil rights attorney who fights for survival after joining an elite black organization with an astonishing secret. The novel brings to light this vast conspiracy within the organization while tackling the issues of power and race.

Not only are Mike Epps and Smith joining in as executive producers,  but also Luke Cage creator Cheo Hodari Coker will be working on the project.

Other Endeavors

Jay-Z worked with Netflix recently on its upcoming film, The Harder They Fall. The film is an American Western where a man looks to exact revenge against the man who murdered his parents. He and James Lassiter worked as producers on-set, and will work alongside each other once again in Forty Acres.

Real name Shawn Carter, Hov has also attained significant success as a businessman. He began his music career when he founded Roc-A-Fella Records in 1995. In 1999, he created the clothing brand Rocawear, and in 2003 founded the luxury sports bar 40/40 Club. The two are now multi-million-dollar corporations.

At the start of the week, Jay-Z and Quincy Adams tied for the artist with the most Grammy nominations in history. They both have 80 nominations. His wife, Beyoncé is close behind with 79 total nominations. It is no surprise for a successful rapper and businessman like Jay-Z. After all, he is deemed as one of the most influential hip-hop artists in history. He is also commonly cited as one of the greatest rappers of all time.
