Lonzo Ball Leaving New Orleans, Signs With Chicago Bulls

Lonzo Ball is heading to the Windy City

Heading into the NBA offseason, the league was on its toes wondering where Lonzo Ball would wind up. The former Laker was sent to New Orleans in 2019 as part of the blockbuster trade that brought Anthony Davis to Los Angeles.

Both LA teams were reportedly interested in acquiring the young guard. However, the oldest Ball brother will be joining the storied Chicago Bulls.

Right at the start of free agency, Ball agreed to a 4 year, $85 million deal with Chicago. The deal is part of a sign-and-trade agreement with New Orleans.

The Pelicans will receive a second-round pick, Tomas Satoransky, and Garret Temple in the move. The latter signed a 3 year, $15 million deal with the team.

Big moves for Chicago

In addition to bringing in Ball, Chicago also signed one of his former Laker teammates in Alex Caruso. The 2020 NBA champion will join the team on a 4 year, $37 million deal.

Another young member of the Bulls team, Lauri Markkanen, is currently a restricted free agent. The big man averaged roughly 14 points and 5 rebounds in 51 games last season.

Lakers Reportedly Interested in a Lonzo Ball Return

Lonzo Ball could be heading home

It’s only been a few years since the Los Angeles Lakers drafted Lonzo Ball. However, the second overall pick in 2017 has spent the past two seasons playing for the New Orleans Pelicans. He left Los Angeles in the blockbuster trade that paired LeBron James with Anthony Davis.

Now, rumor has it that the Lakers may want to reacquire Ball. They’re in need of a solid point guard, having come short in the first round of the NBA Playoffs this year. The California native and former UCLA star fit the mould.

The Lakers aren’t the only team interested

Unfortunately for the Lakers, Lonzo Ball has a few potential suitors. Their hometown rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers, as well as the Chicago Bulls, have been rumored to be interested in him as well.

Ultimately, his current team can choose to keep him if they wish. With Ball being a restricted free agent, the New Orleans Pelicans can choose to match any contract offer given to him by other teams. However, reports suggest that they may be ready to move on from the point guard.
