“Are you married?”
“No.”
The worry lines that develop on top these ladies foreheads with their widened eyes, as they gather around you. Their rings just sitting on their fingers like birds perched on a tree. It’s taunting you. “Yes I am a Mrs. and you are?” It only gets worse as the numbers on your birthday cake get higher and higher. You become ashamed to check off the “single” box on any form. Even if you do have a boyfriend, you’re not married so that doesn’t make it any better. You are ready to be married but that guy just hasn’t come around yet. So you watch all of your friends get married one by one. You’re happy for them but would be happier if you weren’t looking for your husband at their wedding. Your mother constantly reminds you that she’s waiting for grandchildren. Your standards being higher than the next man that walks by, you hold out.
Being single does have its perks! You don’t have to answer to anyone and you don’t have to please anyone but yourself. No matter how fun being single may seem, everyone gets tired of it at some point. Women are more likely to want to settle down and be happy coming home to the same person. We know that our biological clock is ticking and there is little time to create little ones. So all through our late teens and twenties we try to find our husbands to do this with. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t. We always have an ideal life situation, married by 25 and babies not too long after that. And when we miss that mark, society and our families begin to frown upon us. The pressure! Because we know that being single is threatening our entire life, we become desperate.
But actually, it’s okay if you’re not married by your late twenties. Yes, society expects you to be married and have babies before you’re in your mid-thirties. But life doesn’t work the same for everyone. Some women become wives by their mid-twenties and other times they don’t become wives until their forties! However, with wanting children it does become hard to just be patient and wait for someone to come along. But someone will, so don’t worry single ladies. Be proud and mingle.
