Mick Jenkins’ Single ‘Truffles’ Coming 6/23

Chicago in the house!

True Chicago rap fans all know and revere Mick Jenkins, one of the realest out of the city.  Well, we’re in luck, as Mick has a single coming out for us tomorrow on June 23rd!

The song is called ‘Truffles’ and with Mick’s Instagram post, it looks like we’re getting a music video with it too.  The video snippet sounds and looks as though it’s the beginning of the song.  Mick uses his patient flow to discuss his designer clothes while seemingly reminiscing on past times.  The quiet but building beat is right up his alley, unsurprising given that Monte Booker and Renzell produced it.

If you don’t know Monte Booker, he’s a great vehicle for you to immerse yourself into hazy Chicago rap.  Monte is a member of the Smino-founded Zero Fatigue collective.  Monte is a frequent collaborator of Smino’s, having produced his most recent single, ‘Rice & Gravy.’  Among other big names of Chicago Hip-Hop, Monte has also run the boards for NoName, JID, and Saba.

Renzell is another Chicago fixture, collaborating frequently with many of the city’s icons.  In fact, Renzell assisted with plenty of Chance the Rapper’s ’10 Day’ mixtape.  Though his profile remains lowkey, anything he touches is worth checking out.

The game’s most hydrated MC

If you don’t know Mick Jenkins, stop reading this article right now and listen to ‘The Water(S).’ Beyond this important piece of Chicago mixtape culture, Mick has consistently put out some of the most relaxing rap in the field.  In 2020, he released ‘The Circus-EP,’ a decent outing to show he’s still got it, while also proving that he can trade bars with the likes of EARTHGANG.

Between Mick, Renzell, and Monte, there’s a whole lot of common ground.  They both understand each other’s styles and the brief snippet on Instagram seems to be a glimpse at the likely magic to come.  Hopefully they have more work on the way but in the meantime, let’s enjoy what we have from them and appreciate that we have a fire single on the way!

#FMSpotlight: Bari – ‘F*@k It…Burn It All Down’

Listen: Bari – ‘F*@k It…Burn It All Down’

Bari has undoubtedly attested to his status as a breakthrough artist.

Ultimately, the 28-year-old formulates a staple of sound that’s solely his and his alone, revolutionizing the style of modern trap music with intermittent basslines, wavering hi-hats, ethereal-like soundscapes, and other stimulating elements composed by producers like VZN, Blake Wright, Monte Booker, Alley Knock, and Niko the Great. Not to mention, the rapper adorns his flossy, melodic cadence with candid lyrics and ebullient ad-libs that you can’t help but to run back.

His songs often tell a tale of a man whos about his business. The lyrics support this notion by highlighting his ability to “work hard, play hard,” his undying hustle, and his list of accomplishments, to name a few. Given all this, it’s no wonder why Bari has the right to brag.

“I always wanted to transcend. I want people to feel something. Feel joy,” he continues.

Bari is a musician based out of St. Louis, Missouri, an area that’s prone to “put a little edge to you.” Around the clock, he strives to be the greatest ever.

The pseudonym, Bari, came about because this is what most people call him. Music was pretty much in his DNA. Growing up, he got to experience the immense love that his parents had for art. Moreover, his father was a poet, so Bari began writing in his younger years. Since then, he’s been solidifying his spot in the hip-hop game.

His inspiration comes from artists like Pharrell, Future, Drake, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Coldplay, Tame Impala, and Kanye West.

Following the momentum of his album, Layer Cake, Bari dropped an 18-track project titled F*@k It…Burn It All Down.

“When your backs against the wall. You are facing steep odds, under pressure. That’s your chance to burn the brightest, your chance to shine the brightest,” he says about the album’s message.

In a word, F*@k It…Burn It All Down finds Bari on go mode as he speaks about his charm, getting to the bag, donning the best drip, and smoking on exotic. He also propels confidence to new heights as he details his accomplishments. Like he briefly states in his song, “All Of A Sudden,” “F*ck being humble.” The tracks also provide listeners with a blend of genres, infectious energy, and melodic direction. The common denominator? You’ll feel super fly once you press play.

Bari resonates with the track “I’m Raw,” where he speaks shortly on what’s been weighing on his mind. In terms of car tunes, he recommends for others to put on “Jiggaman.”

He says about the creative process behind F*@k It…Burn It All Down,

“I recorded about 30 songs. A couple of them dropped as singles. Then, I recorded in different places like St. Louis and Chicago.”

Moving forward, expect Bari to drop Awesomeness44.
