Examining The Imagery and Meaning of Montero, Part 1

Georgia rapper, Lil Nas X, took the world by storm with his album, Montero, which released last year. The album is heavily linked to Nas X’s own life and personal experiences. It is also notable for its very visible gay imagery. This is a deliberate statement from Nas X to his listeners, and to the world. It is his goal to one day “normalize” the use of such imagery in mainstream music. Rather than take on the whole album as a whole, this article is going to focus on examining the meaning of Montero’s title track, “Montero,” or “Call Me By Your Name.”

When it comes to analyzing language, the meaning of song lyrics can vary greatly from person to person. This is not solely because people think in different ways, but can also be affected by personal experiences. One person may interpret a love song to be wistful while in the midst of a relationship, but once that relationship ends they may view the song as sad. The possibilities are nearly endless. Two people may never fully agree on what a poem, a song, or even a single lyric definitively means. In the face of such a variable set of circumstances, it helps to to cheat. Thankfully, Nas X gave an interview on the meaning of “Montero,” explaining his thought process and what his lyrics meant to him. Spoilers, in his own worlds, “It’s really very much a lust song.”

What is the meaning of Montero?

“Montero” is a word that comes up quite a bit in, well Montero. It is the name of the album, the name of the song, and it is the fictional world the story of the song takes place in. What you may not know, is that Montero is the given first name of Lil Nas X. This meaning of Montero adds an awful lot of context to the song and the album; it is deeply connected to Nas X as a person. It was after all his debut album. In a way it was like putting himself on display for the world to see, something he was only comfortable doing after trying shrooms.  The fact that the world of the title track is also named after himself, sets the stage for this intimacy. It indicates that what we are hearing  is what happened inside Nas X himself.

Can I make it any more obvious?

On one level, the meaning of “Montero” is exactly what it seems to be: a song about gay love and lust. Nas X explains that the inspiration for the song was an actual relationship he was having at the time, “I’m like oh, I like this guy. And then the next day I started writing the song.” “Montero” is actually about Montero pining after a guy he’s just met, which in itself isn’t an uncommon genre of music. Plenty of the sexually explicitly lines of the song fall into this category. The first verse in particular, Nas X says is, “like so, super literal.”

Double Entendre

But not every part of the song is meant to be taken literally. For example,

Cocaine and drinking with your friends
You live in the dark, boy, I cannot pretend
I’m not fazed, only here to sin
If Eve ain’t in your garden, you know that you can

is full of allusion and literary devices. Nas X himself calls “you live in the dark” a double entendre. It refers both to his lovers habits having a negative impact on his own life, as well as being “in the dark” about his sexuality.

This verse also takes a biblical turn. Clearly, the last line is a reference to the second chapter of Genesis and the ‘Garden of Eden.’ This is a story about evil, about an innocent man being tempted to sin and losing everything because of it. In his lyrics, Nas X is actively calling on and using this imagery. Nas X here is being portrayed as the snake, the one tempting Adam to sin. In the original, Adam is tempted by an apple, while here he is tempted by gay sex. Yet, in the same verse, this “sinful” behavior is contrasted with choices that, actually have negative effects, using cocaine and drinking alcohol (which are equated here). Moreover, this interaction is started by an invitation from the supposedly innocent lover.

Clearly, Lil Nas X is calling into question the way we ought to interpret his story, while we are still listening to it…

Lil Nas X Reveals He Used Shrooms to “Open Up” While Writing “Montero”

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Lil Nas X has reportedly revealed he took shrooms while writing MONTERO. The album is an extremely intimate, close look into Nas X’s personal life. After his single, “Old Town Road,” the rapper reportedly felt under pressure from people calling him a “one hit wonder.” This, among other controversies, made it difficult for the rapper to focus on his next album. Taking psychedelics for the first time was evidently the breakthrough he needed. Nas X says the shrooms gave him the comfort he needed to reach a new level of intimacy with his music, to “push past lots of lingering feelings of self-consciousness.” According to him, this was the first time he has been able to incorporate his personal life experiences into his songs.

Lil Nas X and a Wild Marketing Trip

Anyone familiar with the marketing of Montero will be well aware of its… innovative style. Welcome, to the Montero Cinematic Universe:

Nas X put a whole lot of heart and soul into every advertisement, and boy does he have one wild soul. The eccentric nature of each ad really calls into question whether Nas X was only on shrooms while writing his album. However they came about, Montero gave fans a wonderfully trippy ride from conception to birth, because yes, this was an album born, not created.

The story of Montero grew day by day in the months leading up to the album’s official release. Every piece of marketing was wonderful to observe because it expanded upon the foundation built by its predecessors; Nas X really was creating something as involved as the MCU in miniature. Take for example, the way he revealed the release date for the album:

Nas X decided to write a continuation for the song “Industry Baby,” which itself was a song about his struggle in creating MONTERO and overcoming the people who doubted him. In doing so, he projects intimacy and confidence. Referring to himself as a “talentless homosexual” is funny because now the entire world knows that it isn’t true.

I think by far by favorite advertisement was The Montero Show, because it was a terrifically succinct way to identify the kind of relationship Nas X has with this album: that of an interviewer asking probing, intimate questions of a distraught human being in a very public setting. However, the most touching ad is undoubtedly the Baby Registry of Charities, a moving act raising awareness for both MONTERO and the social issues at it, and Nas X’s, core.

A Uniquely Intimate Production Style

It would be remiss to discuss the success of MONTERO without talking about Take a Daytrip. The duo of producers claim their success is based on a foundation of friendship. Denzel Baptiste and David Biral develop a personal relationship with their clients. Eventually, they stop being “clients: and instead become friends. In an interview with Billboard, they claim this is the secret to their quality productions, “As we build those people up, they bring us with them and we pull them up. It’s become a ladder of not skipping steps. In those situations, you’re dealing with people who are your equals.”

This uniquely intimate approach to music production was paramount to the creation of MONTERO. The duo created a safe space for Nas X, allowing him to be intimate with his music. When Nas X started taking shroom they stayed by his side, sober, to ensure his safety. According to Take a Daytrip, the creative process began with them writing music. Once they had compiled some musical notes, they played them for Lil Nas X, who then wrote lyrics for the particular movements that spoke to him. In some instances of particular inspiration, they say that Nas X joined right in and freestyled the entire song on the spot.

Continuing Intimacy

MONTERO has been a resounding success, but despite finally achieving his dreams Lil Nas X shows no signs of slowing down. His Instagram and Twitter have only grown wilder and wackier. Most recently, he shared his Halloween costume, “He Who Must Be Called By Your Name.”

Whatever his past reservations, Nas X is no longer afraid to be himself or to share his personal story in a public setting. We at FMHipHop are excited to see what comes out of Lil Nas X next. And maybe need to ask for the number of his dealer.

Boosie Badazz Under Fire From Lil Nas X’s Dad After Twitter Rant

On yet another installment of “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Boosie Badazz“, we find the Louisiana rapper making some shockingly homophobic comments towards Lil Nas X. This isn’t exactly something new for him, though. Badazz has a history of relentlessly attacking Lil Nas on his sexuality. However, things are a little different this time. And no, this episode doesn’t include Mike Tyson scaring Badazz straight for the latter’s comments on Dwayne Wade’s transgender daughter. This time, Lil Nas’ father steps up to the plate.

It all started with a joke from Lil Nas.  Of course, intervention from Dad wouldn’t have been required had Badazz not, yet again, taken things too far. Last Saturday (October 23), Lil Nas made the “announcement” that he and Badazz were working together. Posted to Instagram, the joke was obvious. Badazz’s non-stop barrage of disdain for Lil Nas wasn’t exactly going to bring the artists together. For all intents and purposes, the joke could have ended right there. But yet again, Badazz had something to say. Or rather, something to rant about.

Fair content warning: this was the 38-year old rapper’s actual response to a joke:

Boosie Badazz Responds to Lil Nas X's Dad

Did you get all that? The homophobic ranting, the slurs, and the part where he tells Lil Nas to kill himself because it would “DO THIS WORLD A HUGE FAVOR”? While Lil Nas had a great, perfectly-him response, on some level, a line was crossed. Enter, Robert Stafford. Father to Montero Lamar Hill (Lil Nas X), the Georgia gospel singer had some choice words for Boosie:

Going for the throat, Stafford called out Badazz’s style, raps, image, looks, and more in an Instagram story. Stafford also added that “The game has past (passed) you.” Ouch. And while fans praised Stafford for his defense of his son, Badazz had a response ready. The same day, (Tuesday, October 26), Badazz responded with the following tweet:

So far, neither Lil Nas nor Stafford has responded to Badazz’s latest comments. And why would they? Badazz stays juvenile, and the bad decisions continue. Some notable missteps from this year include defending DaBaby’s homophobic rant at Rolling Loud, and having Bill Cosby market his autobiographical movie

Lil Nas X to Receive Backlash for New Album Tracklist, Resulting in a Feature with Kid Cudi

Lil Nas X’s new album is coming out on September 17th. In a short video posted on September 1st, the rapper revealed a new album tracklist. The author of Montero’s hit has recorded an eponymous album, which features Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Elton John, and more.

Once out, Montero’s features faced criticism on Twitter. People were blaming the artist for not inviting any black male artists to the record. For example, @JiggleClayLTD tweeted: “Lil Nas X’s album has no black male guest lol. Just women & white men. No agenda tho.” In response, Lil Nas X assumed the problem might be that “a lot of them just don’t wanna work with me.”

https://twitter.com/JiggleClayLTD/status/1433157904815771648?s=20

Soon enough, Kid Cudi reached out to Lil Nas X and offered to “work w u and frolic in rose gardens w u singin about my pain.” Lil Nas X then said that “u heard it here first, everybody Kid Cudi x Lil Nas for montero deluxe.”

With a lot of attention in the media, the artist’s upcoming album is promising and keeps the fand excited. Now they also have a deluxe album version to wait for. People seem to be happy about the featuring too.

Before the Montero

Lil Nas X has been on the rise lately. He passed DaBaby as Spotify’s most-streamed male rapper, released an uncensored music video, and soon performing at MTV music awards.

Lil Nas X’s new album Montero was announced around two months ago. It’s repeating the name of the rapper’s spring hit song ‘Montero.’ Since then, he released a single called ‘Industry Baby,’ which later received the mentioned uncensored video.

Lil Nas X also left unsafe for work comments under Chloe Bailey’s tweet with pictures for Flaunt Magazine cover. The rapper wrote, “no disrespect but u need yo ass ate for this because wow.”

Lil Nas X Passes Da Baby as Spotify’s Most Streamed Male Rapper

With 52 million monthly listeners, Lil Nas X now passes DaBaby as the most popular male rapper on Spotify. According to the Georgia rapper, this is the most monthly listener he’s ever had. Nas X remarked in a joyful tweet, “Wow, this is insane. This is the most I’ve ever had in my career. Thank u to everybody listening.”.

This comes at a time when Lil Nas has two tracks on Spotify that are doing quite well. Following the release of “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” he recently released “INDUSTRY BABY,” a collaboration with Jack Harlow. Given who he surpassed to become the most popular male rapper on Spotify, the statistic likely meant considerably more to Lil Nas X.

DaBaby has been under fire for the past few weeks from fans who were offended by his homophobic remarks at Rolling Loud. T.I. mentioned Lil Nas X in an attempt to defend DaBaby last month, connecting Baby’s statements to Nas X’s music videos and performances. Tip then wrote on Instagram, “If Lil Nas X can kick his shit in peace… so should DaBaby.”

Lil Nas X tweeted shortly after, “I’m starting to think you niggas gay too cuz yall keep on my dick. Some of y’all not even mad that I’m gay, some of y’all mad that I’m gay and still succeeding,”. Much of Lil Nas’ current musical era has been highly influenced by his sexuality. In this era, Lil Nas has been outspokenly gay in his performances, music videos, and other media. He hasn’t said anything directly yet about DaBaby’s remarks, but this latest news has to feel like a triumph.

A big congratulations for Lil Nas X from us here at FM Hip Hop as he passes DaBaby as the most listened-to male rapper on Spotify.

Lil Nas X Posts Uncensored Video of “Industry Baby”

After high demand from fans, Lil Nas X released the uncensored version of his latest single, “Industry Baby”

There was a scene in the music video of the chart-topping song “Industry Baby” that caught a lot of attention from viewers. The scene involved a large group of naked men dancing in a prison shower, featuring Lil Nas X himself in the center. This portion of the video was censored; however, many fans requested an uncensored look at this scene. The “Montero” artist delivered in his typical fashion. He released a new, uncensored look at the video and scene specifically. It quickly became the number one trending video on Youtube, but it wasn’t what most fans expected.

Lil Nas X is known for trolling his fans and enemies online. Once again, he is no stranger to misleading fans. Leading up to the release of the song, the artist hinted at it as being many things other than a song, such as a court hearing for his Nike shoe scandal. Instead, we got a wonderful collaboration with Jack Harlow. In the case of the “Industry Baby” uncensored music video, he trolled us once again. While many fans expected an overtly graphic and sexual shower dance scene, they were instead met with something almost as shocking. What was it? You’ll have to watch the video to find out!

Lil Nas X Announces New Album Coming Soon

Lil Nas X finally announces new album, coming soon with a creative teaser!

Lil Nas X, after an extended rollout, finally plans to release his first debut album, Montero.

The album will arrive after a long list of singles and promotional teasers dating back to July 2020, when he released a teaser video for Call Me By Your Name.

https://twitter.com/LilNasX/status/1281311946810068992?s=20

This teaser went viral and had fans begging for the release of the song. Lil Nas X released a special Christmas song entitled “Holiday” on November 13. That song spawned some of the most creative photo shoots we have seen for a single release, with many portraits of the artist displaying a Grinch-like quality.

An Unlikely Hero

Montero (Call Me By Your Name) was released earlier this year in March, which led to much controversy. The provocative music video, along with a shoe promo gone bad, made Lil Nas X a heated topic of conversation, with discussions about sexual orientation and religion in rap and Black culture in general. The boundaries Lil Nas pushed became major news as many people dissected his performances into think pieces about the current state of rap.

He continued the rollout for this album with the release of the track “Sun Goes Down.” The song is an introspective song about self-love and standing up for yourself. It was released on May 21, along with a music video. The rapper promoted this single by performing “Sun Goes Down” along with “Montero” on SNL on May 22.

This performance led to an unfortunate clothing malfunction during a dance routine. That also went viral and increased publicity for the song.

On June 29, Lil Nas went to social media to promote his first debut album, Montero, with a teaser video. The video parodies the popular Marvel movie intro.

The teaser includes flashes of Lil Nas’s music videos as the word Montero: The Movie is revealed. The album is said to be “coming soon,” but I have a sneaky suspicion the album is going to arrive before July is over.

Lil Nas has always been an iconic character since he entered the game. We expect nothing less from his debut project.

Are you excited for this new release?

Lil Nas X Splits His Pants Wide Open While Working Stripper Pole on “SNL” (Video)

Lil Nas X Splits His Pants Wide Open While Working Stripper Pole On “SNL”

Lil Nas X eccentric style backfired on him in a funny, but embarrassing way Saturday night. He was the guest performer on last week’s episode of “SNL”. He performed his new somber, but moving song on self-worth in “Sun Goes Down” and his controversial hit single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”. It was during this performance that something happened he didn’t plan. The performance was hot and provocative, with him in a skin-tight leather jumper with his entire torso exposed. He performed the song with a group of male dancers with their shirts off and matching leather pants.

At about the 2:20 mark, he begins to dance on the stripper pole behind him and there is where it happens. He drops low and he noticeably comes up, embarrassed and holding his crotch. He is a professional, so soldiered on through the set, but was noticeably uncomfortable after. As the jokester we all know him to be, he interacted with his fans on Twitter, laughing about the whole situation, going as far as making a Tiktok reaction to the moment.

https://twitter.com/LilNasX/status/1396486586150309897?s=20

Hopefully he isn’t too embarrassed, as we still want to see that infamous pole routine in the future.

Lil Nas X Begs Fans to Stream “Montero” Before it is Removed

For all you Lil Nas X fans, please do not panic!

It was just a week ago when Lil Nas X “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” landed on the #1 spot for the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. Now it is a possibility of being removed from streaming services. And many of his fans, including himself, is not happy about the situation.

Many of his fans took to social media to dispute the difficulty of streaming the controversial song.  Lil Nas X took to Twitter to comment on the situation. Lil Nas x tweets:

“since call me by your name is no longer working on many streaming services i will be uploading the audio to pornhub at 3pm est.” Following up by, “not even joking,” and asked followers to “stream call me by your name hard today because it may no longer be available tomorrow and there’s nothing i can really do about it.”

However, since the “Old Town Road” singer dropped his latest visual, it has not been a good one. A lot of people had something to say in regards to the video. And in return, the singer received a lot of backlash for the visuals (which I view as unnecessary, but that is a whole different topic of discussion).

The song, named after X himself (Montero Lamar Hill), is celebrated among X as embracing and coming to terms with his sexuality. Although the imagery contained drawing a connection between ancient and modern-day persecution, it missed the mark. People fail to grasp the actual meaning of the video. Instead, it painted it out to be something it is not.

“Montero” was released on March 26 on Columbia and debuted 51 on the Billboard Hot 100. It drew in 46.9 million US streams and sold 21, 000 downloads in the ending week of April, according to MRC data. And reaching 1.1 million radio airplay audience impressions.

In fact, despite the hysteria surrounding “Montero,” Billboard has confirmed it will continue to stay on streaming services. Safe to say, it is okay for you Lil Nas X fans to have a sigh of relief.

In brief, it is not that serious. With everything going on today, THIS is the least of our worries. Even if “Montero” was no longer on streaming services, it comes off as a bit drastic. Either way, Lil Nas X and his record label came up with an elaborate marketing scheme. It worked.
