NBC is putting a halt to the Golden Globes, by canceling the award ceremony that will not take place in 2022.
This past Monday, NBC announced that they are not broadcasting the 2022 Golden Globes Awards. The decision is coming after increasing criticism of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) nominations in February. As a result, this caused many actors to speak out including veteran actor Tom Cruise. Cruise recently returned his Golden Globe Awards in protest of HFPA.
Since releasing the nominations of the 78th annual award ceremony in February, the HFPA faced scrutiny. That sparked a wide range of events that led to the cancelation of the award ceremony. Michaela Coel’s May I May Destroy You and Issa Rae’s Insecure, received zero nominations. The omissions left many people frustrated at HFPA.
When the Los Angeles Times published investigations of HFPA, it not only shared the alleged culture of corruption but did not involve Black Journalists. In addition to announcing not to broadcast the award ceremony in 2022, NBC told CNN Business;
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes.”
In a released statement on their website, The HFPA pledges to make changes…
“Regardless of the next air date of the Golden Globes, implementing transformational changes as quickly — and as thoughtfully — as possible remains the top priority for our organization. We invite our partners in the industry to the table to work with us on the systemic reform that is long overdue, both in our organization as well as within the industry at large.”
In the light of the recent allegations, this is nothing new. The HFPA has had a long history of corruption and a lack of diversity. NBC did the right thing by canceling the 2022 award ceremony because this will take more than a year to undo years of wrongdoing. There is a much-needed change that needs to take place in Hollywood. And we can no doubt start from here.
