Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, and More Make 2022 Oscars Shortlist

With the official Oscar nominations less than two months away, it’s time for a shortlist from the Academy. A shortlist is effectively a progress report for studios to track the success of their projects. Think of it as an “unofficially official” prediction list for the Oscar draft. Among the revealed categories was “Best Original Song,” where some 15 songs are competing for the Academy’s title of “best”. It’s a field packed full of hip-hop and R&B talent, with the likes of Beyonce, a Jay-Z/Kid Cudi combo, and much more.

Jay-Z vs. Beyonce?

Starting us off is Beyonce with her song “Be Alive”, featured in the Venus and Serena Williams biopic King Richard. Beyonce found herself on the shortlist last year as well, for her song “Spirit”, featured in 2020’s The Lion King.

Joining her in the competition is husband Jay-Z. Teaming up with Kid Cudi for their song “Guns Go Bang”, the two big names look to bring a win to the western The Harder They Fall.  Should Jay find himself in the final list with Beyonce, it will be the first time in Oscar history that a couple has gone head-to-head for the title of Best Original Song.

Double Duty for Cudi

And Cudi’s got more. Turns out, you can enter a competition twice. A double nomination, if you will. Joining up with Ariana Grande, the two make The Shortlist, Vol. 1 with their song “Just Look Up”, for the satire sci-fi film Don’t Look Up.

The Best Song Champ Returns

However, the competition is far from decided. After all, there is a returning champ this year. Coming off her 2021 win, H.E.R. is back with “Automatic Woman”, featured in Halle Berry’s Bruised. H.E.R. won last year with “Fight for You”, bringing it home for Judas and The Black Messiah.

Turning up the Difficulty

Finally, we have Jennifer Hudson. She’s a vocal powerhouse. Her heaps of awards (musical and acting) speak for themselves. And now she’s up for Best Original Song with her “Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)” from her Aretha Franklin biopic Respect. J-Hud leads a sharp cast as Franklin and is also an executive producer of the film.

The field is packed and there can only be one winner this March. Who do you think has the best shot? Let us know by interacting with us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook!

Respect Is Coming to the Screen

Respect Is Coming to the Screen

An iconic singer is in the movies at last. The upcoming movie ‘Respect,’ which is about Aretha Franklin’s life, will reach the big screen in U.S. theaters on August 13, following many delays from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Jennifer Hudson will star as Franklin, taking the helm as the Queen of Soul. As Hudson said in an interview, music was Franklin’s comfort, just as it was Hudson’s.

Music was Aretha’s comfort zone, her expression,” she says.

The film will depict a dynamic life

Aside from Franklin’s rise to stardom, the MGM biopic will examine her early life in Detroit, involvement in the civil rights movement and her fight for respect in the music business and beyond, in the Queen of Soul’s own words.

“She’s an artist, she’s a woman, she’s an icon,” says Hudson. “But the biggest impact on her was the people in her life.”

Franklin’s son gave the film a positive review

Kecalf Franklin was able to screen the film prior to its impending release, since a private screening took place for the filmmakers to consider the family’s opinion. Kecalf called Hudson’s performance as his mother “phenomenal.” The youngest son of the late singer, he had nothing but positive things to say about the film based on his mother.

“We had a wonderful time watching the film,” he said. “Jennifer Hudson did a phenomenal job as well as the rest of the cast. We truly thank you all for providing your GOD-given talents to depict our mother/grandmothers’ life story.”

#HipHop4Her: When Too Little Is Too Much

If you got it, flaunt it right? I believe this is true. If you have nice teeth, you should smile more. You have nice legs; show them off in the sexiest heels. If you have a nice butt, alright maybe you shouldn’t take every picture showing your butt. After a while it’s like OK, we get it! Of course women bask in their beauty, but at the same time it is also distasteful to constantly show off what you’re working with. So often I see women taking pictures in itty-bitty shorts, or laying down in their bra. Honestly half the time, it’s usually these type of females who have serious self-esteem issues. They seek the heart-eye emoji’s and the full inboxes.

How can anyone, matter of fact any MAN take a women like this seriously? What does she have to offer if she’s already offering it to everybody else? And these are the same females crying “lonely” when it’s raining out. GIRL BYE! It shouldn’t take instagram and Facebook “likes” to make a woman feel better. I believe she has to love herself enough to be modest, be mysterious and build standards for herself. No one needs to know that you’re feeling horny tonight, or that your panties match your bra. Keep it to yourself.

The same thing goes for clothing. Something that many of women choose not to put on. I think there is a fine line between sexy and tacky. Wearing a dress with a deep plunge in the front or back can be sexy. Wearing a sheer shirt with pasties is tacky. And wearing a sheer shirt without covering your breast is even worse. You know the saying “less is more?” Yea, well it does not apply in this area. Women make this mistake where just because a celebrity did it, we can do it too… NO. We cannot always pull off something Rihanna wore. She’s Rihanna for a reason.

I always think of it this way, if the top half of the outfit is showing something, then the bottom half should be modest. The men don’t need to see everything. You want to actually awe him when he finally gets to take your clothes off. So few women realize that when they show less, they become more appealing. They look as if they can hold conversation, rather than just hold it down in the bedroom. They look worthy of being “wifey material.” Try covering up for once.
