Nicki Minaj Gets Real About Her Sobriety & Mental Health

Nicki Minaj is a mega pop star with millions of fans. She’s also a human like you or me, and she’s opening up about her sobriety.

Nicki Goes Clean

Earlier this week (Apr 21), the artist hopped on Twitter to vent about her past marijuana use. Nicki Minaj opened up, saying she’s moved on from using weed as a vice. Luckily, she’s found success in healthier mental health practices.

“I used to b happy when I was high,” Nicki tweeted. “Now I’m happy when I’m sober. No judgment to anyone. Be gentle with yourself.”

In addition to this positive thought, Nicki Minaj also opened up about how people still misconceive her as a smoker. “My eyes naturally look like that,” she sent out.

“[and] people always think I’m high when I’m not wearing makeup. Plus my eyes are naturally gray & I was born in the Caribbean islands of Cuba. The 1st paragraph was true tho,” she confirmed.

Letting Things Slide

Since this album rollout began, Nicki has noticeably been on a more pacifist streak. This change is supposedly due to the birth of her son Papa Bear in Oct. 2020. But even when she stays quiet, there’s always buzz around the Queens icon. Recently, there’s been a few strange instances of Nicki’s name being brought up in the media.

Earlier in the month (Apr 18), Erica Banks namedropped Nicki in a Revolt interview.

“I love Nicki, but I just felt like, I been trying to reach out to her for a long time, but I felt like she kinda ignores me, and she entertains girls who really can’t rap,” she said. A very hot take indeed.

It’s presumed Erica spoke on Coi Leray. Leray recently teamed up with Nicki for “Blick Blick.” Coi responded directly to the apparent diss with five laughing emojis. However, Nicki had no response.

This week, Rubi Rose briefly mentioned Minaj in another awkward incident (Apr 19). During an appearance on the Big Facts podcast, the topic of dating men who make less money came up.

“My preferences are chocolate, tall, preferably [makes] more money than me,” Rubi said.

The host DJ responded with some skepticism. “What if they don’t?” He asked.

“Then we can work it out,” Rubi retorted. I will help, of course, but I don’t want to be the man in the relationship. But I will. I see Nicki Minaj is happy.” Rubi later clarified she didn’t mean any harm with the quote but still, ouch.

Similar to Erica Banks, Rubi’s comment didn’t garner a direct reaction from Nicki. Nonetheless, the Barbz certainly took it as shade.

The 2021 XXL Freshman List Is Here!

The 2021 XXL Freshman List has arrived!

The 2021 XXL Freshman List has arrived!

The famous hip-hop publication has gained notoriety for releasing a Freshman List every year ever since 2007. The Freshman List features ten artists to watch, all of whom appear on the cover of the magazine, and it has a history of showcasing underground rappers and other artists it sees as on the rise. The list has also grown extremely popular over the years and created significant excitement among the general public and artists alike.

Now the 2021 XXL Freshman List returns and brings some very interesting picks. This year XXL has chosen an outer space theme for the cover, entitled “Out Of This World.”

The full list of Freshmen for this year includes Morray, 42 Dugg, Flo Milli, Pooh Shiesty, Toosii, Blxst, Iann Dior, Rubi Rose, DDG, Coi Leray and Lakeyah. All of them come from different backgrounds, styles and influences and still they all somehow reflect the current sound of hip-hop, although some people have criticized the list for being too reductive of the actual art form.

The Freshmen

42 Dugg is a Detroit rapper best known for his collaboration with Lil Baby on the track “We Paid.” He’s signed with both Yo Gotti’s CMG Records and Lil Baby’s 4PF imprint, and recently released the project Free Dem Boyz.  In addition, he just recently signed a co-publishing deal with Warner Music.

Flo Milli, from Mobile, Alabama, broke out with the TikTok hits “Beef FloMix” and “In the Party.” In 2020, she followed that up with her first RCA release Ho, Why Is You Here?

Morray is a rapper and singer from Fayetteville, North Carolina whose “Quicksand” video went viral. After releasing Street Sermons, he sang on J. Cole’s Off-Season song “My Life.”

Memphis’ Pooh Shiesty is a member of Gucci Mane’s The New 1017 label. His 2021 mixtape Shiesty Season includes the breakout Lil Durk collaboration “Back in Blood.”

Lakeyah has made a name for herself as a rising star in Milwaukee’s growing rap scene. In April, she released her In Due Time mixtape on Quality Control.

More Freshman

Coi Leray has signed with Republic. Her song “No More Parties” undergoes constant remixes and has numerous spins on Tiktok.

Toosii was born in Syracuse, New York and grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. This year, he released Thank You for Believing, a mixtape that features guest spots from DaBaby, Latto and Key Glock.

Blxst, from Los Angeles, California, released his 2021 Just for Clarity EP on Red Bull Records. The EP includes the track “Don’t Forget,” featuring Drakeo the Ruler.

Rubi Rose hails from Lexington, Kentucky. She made her debut with For the Streets, released on Christmas Day 2020.

Iann Dior is best known for featuring in the 24kGoldn song “Mood.” He released his debut album Industry Plant in 2019.

DDG, from Pontiac, Michigan, signed with Epic Records and teamed up with OG Parker for the March 2021 project Die 4 Respect.

10 Artist Buzzin This Week…

Six days into 2021 and it seems like everybody’s in their bag. It’s so inspiring to see everybody starting the 1st quarter off so strong.  I need this energy all year around. But until then, here are 10 artist buzzin’ this week:

1.TOOSII

I don’t know if it’s just me but it seems like Toosii came out of nowhere and started killing the game. He recently released a 6 track EP entitled DICKPRESSED which starts off with his hit singles “Sapiosexual” and “Love Cycle” featuring Summer Walker. Those tracks are followed by 4 more songs that are all a vibe. When was the last time you heard an EP you could listen to without skipping a track?

2.STERL GOTTI

Sterl Gotti is Detroit’s secret weapon. Although, the city makes noise right now on an Independent level. I truly believe Sterl Gotti is going to be the artist that brings attention to the city on a major level. He’s co-signed by Winner Circle, putting his production on a higher level. 2021 is guaranteed his year.

 3.POOH SHIESTY

Memphis native Pooh Shiesty gained a lot of attention in a little bit of time. Back in April, he was signed to Gucci Mane’s 1017 after only rapping for about two years. Pooh Shiesty has also been featured on tracks with people like Lil Baby and Money Bagg Yo. His recent single “Back In Blood” with Chicago’s Lil Durk continues to go up.

4.DESS DIOR

Most people know Dess Dior for being best friends with Jayda Cheaves and most recently her relationship with Future. Aside from that, Dess is a rapper who talks that Rich shit. She was recently featured on a Christmas song with Coi Leray and Maliibu Miitch. I personally can’t wait to watch her prove all the people wrong who think she’s just some Instagram girl.

5.RUBI ROSE

https://youtu.be/X09KMQ0f3Ss

Rubi Rose has a very distinctive voice that everybody loves. She’s super pretty and petite so you wouldn’t expect it from her; which makes the voice so much better.  She recently released a project entitled For The Streets. After listening to the intro, I gained a lot of respect for her. I think 2021 will be the year that people put some respect on her name as an artist.

 6.MAXREALLYREAL

https://youtu.be/cQiyzhCn70k

Brownsville’s MaxReallyReal is really a vibe. I just discovered him on clubhouse but apparently I’m late. After doing some research it seems like he’s been buzzing in NYC for about a year or so now.  In 2021, I’m expecting him to be buzzing everywhere. He’s most known for drill songs and has features with NY favorites like Banko Black, Eli Fross and Sosa Geek. About a week ago, he hit everybody with a plot twist, when he released “Ocean/Thought You Loved Me”; proving he’s a versatile artist.

 7.SUKIHANA

To be honest, Sukihana recently pissed me off with one of her shenanigans.  Since then I low key tapped her off my radar but I can’t deny what the people are talking about. A few weeks ago, Cupcakke dropped a diss track toward a few female rappers and Sukihana was the only one to respond. I respect that because I’m a firm believer that diss tracks are apart of Hip Hop. Last week, Sukihana followed up with her single “No One” showing a softer side of her.

  8.NEEK BUCKS

Neek Bucks has been putting on for Harlem for some time now. A few months ago, he linked with Stunna Gambino for “Voice” which is almost at 400k views on Youtube. I’ve personally never been disappointed by a Neek Bucks release. 2021 is going to be the year the world sees his worth.

9.BILLY BLEU

New York was shocked when they found out that Billy Bleu was expecting a child. She’s a lot of rap girls’ goals and a lot of rap guys’ fantasies. Some people doubted that she could make a comeback but this week she let everybody know she’s back with a vengeance. I’m super excited to see what she brings to the table 2021.

10. E DOT BABY

Edot Baby is a 15 year old from Sugar Hill in Harlem. Every time I listen to him rap, I’m shocked that a 15 year old is reciting these lyrics. Nonetheless, I cannot deny that he’s hard. I’m just waiting for someone to snatch him up and sign him to their label.
