Stevie Wonder and Common will perform at the Stand Up to Cancer telethon on August 21 (8 PM EDT), live from Los Angeles.
It is the seventh annual telethon held by the charity Stand Up to Cancer, or SU2C. Hosting the event will be the husband-and-wife team, actor and comedian Ken Jeong and Dr Tran Ho, joined by actors Anthony Anderson and Sofia Vergara.
Joining Wonder and Common will be Brittany Howard, of Alabama Shakes fame.
Other guests include Matthew McConaughey, Chandra Wilson, Jennifer Garner, Tony Hale, and many others. Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon and her husband, media businessman Tim Roth are producing the event.
Originally scheduled for the Fall of 2020, SU2C postponed the program until August of this year. The reason given was a concern due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wonder and Common, together again
This is not the first time that the two legends have worked together. They’ve shared stages in the past, such as Muhammad Ali’s 70th birthday celebration in 2012.
In addition to performing together, Common and Wonder have collaborated together on multiple projects. Most notably, they released “Black America Again”, a lead-off single to the album of the same name back in 2016. Following this, American DJ and producer Amerigo Gazaway released A Common Wonder, a mash-up “imagined album” between Stevie Wonder and Common.
A great and noble cause
Since 2008, Stand Up to Cancer has raised more than half a billion dollars for cancer research. These contributions, large and small, have paved the way for groundbreaking therapies and at least two hundred and fifty clinical trials.
Back in 2017, SU2C created a new initiative for the company: help everyone get into clinical trials. The initiative aims to help minority groups get placed in clinical trials, so cancer research can represent a more diverse population.
