Four years ago, rapper XXXTentacion was killed in Deerfield Beach, FL. He was 20-years-old. Now, Lil Uzi Vert has kind words for the rapper on the anniversary of his death. During the Something In The Water Festival in Washington, D.C., Uzi said, “Today is a special day. It was an artist by the name of XXX. Rest in Peace to XXX.” At the time of his death, X, real name Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, garnered quite a few accolades. Most recently, the rapper broke Drake’s streaming record. His sophomore album has 7.884 billion streams according to Complex. Though the two SoundCloud pioneers never spoke to each other, they have a common ground.
That was, like, my only competition. Every time I dropped, he dropped… He would go number one or I would go number one. Either way it was going to go, one of us was going to turn it up.
Then there’s the possibility of a posthumous collaboration. Initially, Uzi expressed concerns about putting out a record. However, he didn’t completely dismiss the idea. “I’m weird because I understand that they’re not here living. What if that’s not the vision that they want?” he said. He continued saying that in the same position, he’d be upset if someone released something outside his vision. However, he finished saying, “You know. If it works out, it works out.” Following his kind words, Uzi told the DJ to play some of Onfroy’s music. The crowd sang along to X’s popular track “Look At Me.”
The Longstanding Legacy Of A Young Rapper
In March, a two-hour documentary about X’s life, Look At Me: XXXTentacion, came out on HULU. Though 50 Cent claimed there were aspects of his life missing, it was well-received by fans. Though he’s been gone for some time, Onfroy’s legacy still lives on through broken records and the memories a made with fans.
