The capital of Louisiana, home to LSU and stunning views of the Mississippi River, also has a rich historical significance. And beneath the glamorous attractions and historical landmarks lies the underground gem of hip-hop gold. The state’s second-largest city is a “burgeoning hip-hop spot to watch” says XXL Magazine, and it’s clear why.

Four University of New Orleans students and the men behind 166 Productions will premiere their feature-length documentary “WTF! (We the Future)” based on the city’s storied rap scene. UNO students KC Simms, Maison Harris, Kirkland Sheppard and Braelyn Collier are the names behind the city’s expose so far.

“Baton Rouge is a city that’s nuanced and multilayered,” Simms said. “[It] is also a city with deep emotional scars [so] we felt that if we could show a community that’s united then we’d be doing our part in making sure that the next generation can look and see a better Baton Rouge.”

The production consists of interviews and collaborations with 16 local artists including Michael Armstead and Caleb Brown. The premiere is free and open to the public July 22 at 7:30 p.m., located at 222 North Blvd Town Square in Baton Rouge.

“We’re really excited for everyone to see these talented artists,” said Simms. “Our hope is that afterwards people are going to have a fuller idea of the bright future that Baton Rouge and Louisiana as a whole has. [And] we wanted to document that in all its beauty.”
