Manny Pacquiao enters the ring tonight for the 69th time in his professional career. Against a very dangerous opponent in Lucas Matthysse, Pacquiao is taking an unnecessary risk. Let me make 1 thing very clear, the Pac-Man is only fighting at this point for money. There is nothing he can accomplish now that would alter or improve his legacy.
There are no “mega-fights” left. No longer considered the best in the Welterweight division, and about to turn 40 years old, why take the risk? This fight isn’t about Mattysse’s Welterweight title, but about Pacquiao’s tax debt. Unfortunately, we’ve seen this movie before with many other superstars of the sport.
Now, we’re left with a great fighter past his prime searching for a payday. He last fought over a year ago in Australia, now he’s fighting in Malaysia. No longer the top draw of the sport, he’s scrambling to find the highest bidder. This time he has picked the wrong opponent, though.
Matthysse is a big puncher who’s been in the ring with some of the very best fighters of this era. Of his 39 wins, 36 were by knockout. This man is not to be played with! This won’t be a storybook ending for Pacquiao and it won’t end well for the hero of the Philippines. Matthysse will win tonight, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends like most of his fights do, by knockout.
