The late, absolute legend of Motown Records and funk artist, Rick James will receive a well-deserved homage in Emmy-nominated director Sacha Jenkins’ (of “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men” fame) new documentary.

“This man was a genius,” Ice Cube says in the trailer for Bitchin’: The Sound and Fury of Rick James. Followed by Bootsy Collins himself, in an everyday tone, referring to James’ “electric-ass-attitude.”

[Cue Dave Chappelle’s famous “I’m Rick James, Bitch!” parody for good measure].

As inspirational as James was to funk and Black History, the doc will also capture the controversial side of things. His later career, riddled with drugs – which he wasn’t shy about – and sexual assault allegations, was otherwise a fabled artistry.

“I want [to] write about whatever,” James says in a past interview. “If I want to call Richard Nixon an asshole I’m going [to] write about it.”

If the indications given in the trailer and Sacha Jenkins’ prolific career are not enough reason to be thrilled for the premiere (and they should be – if you have not seen the Wu-Tang doc mentioned above, be good to yourself and do so), then I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe you need some sort of “Bruce-Lee-type crosskick” from Charlie Murphy or something.

The documentary premieres Friday, September 3 at 9 p.m. ET and be sure to check out this gem by Samantha Evans right here!
